Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Despite a stream of late pressure, the Saint Joseph's field hockey team was unable to score a tying goal and fell at La Salle, 3-1, at Hank DeVincent Field on Friday afternoon.
La Salle (6-7 overall, 3-3 Atlantic 10) opened the scoring midway through the first half as Jenica Miller netted her second of the season on an assist from Megan Kida. The Hawks had a chance late in the half, but Explorers goalkeeper Rachel Hartman made a key save in the final 30 seconds to keep it a 1-0 game heading into halftime.
The Explorers doubled their lead just over eight minutes into the second half on a goal from Kendall Kreider.
Saint Joseph's (5-8 overall, 3-3 Atlantic 10) got back within a goal midway through the second half as sophomore Jackalyn Pauling tallied her third goal of the season. Senior Claire McDugall's initial attempt was saved by Hartman, but Pauling was there for the rebound, tucking it home to cut the deficit in half.
Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, Kreider added an empty-net goal with 2:04 to play to seal the win for La Salle.
Hartman finished the day with six saves for the Explorers, while junior Amelia Deibler made five stops for SJU.
The Hawks will look to bounce back on Sunday afternoon when they host William and Mary at noon. Prior to the game, SJU will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the field hockey program and honor both the first team in Hawk history and the 1995 Atlantic 10 champions.
