Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – Graduate student Jenny Morris scored a pair of goals, including an overtime game-winner, as the Saint Joseph's field hockey team came from behind for a critical 4-3 win over VCU at Cary Street Field on Friday night. Freshman Anna Willocks added two goals of her own on the evening as well.
Just over seven minutes into extra time, Morris dribbled through the Ram defense and unleashed a shot from just inside the circle. The effort beat goalkeeper Chessa Kownurko and sent the Hawks into sole possession of third place in the Atlantic 10.
Saint Joseph's (5-6 overall, 3-1 Atlantic 10) opened the scoring 10 minutes into the contest as Morris converted a penalty corner, assisted by senior Nadia de Vries and junior Melanie Colozzi, to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
VCU (4-7 overall, 2-2 Atlantic 10) equalized just less than six minutes later on a goal from Lauren Kaup.
Kaup struck again just 82 seconds into the second half to give the Rams their first lead of the night. Willocks answered at the 51:07 mark, taking a pass from junior Kerri Turk and finding the back of the cage to knot the game at two.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, Kaup finished off her hat trick just 51 seconds later to put the hosts back in front. However, a yellow card VCU's Taleah Scott left the Rams shorthanded, and Willocks cashed in on the opportunity on a feed from de Vries to send the game to overtime.
The Rams had two opportunities to end the game early in overtime, but junior Amelia Deibler made a big save on Emily McNamara to keep things level and eventually allow the Hawks to claim the victory.
Deibler finished the night with five saves for SJU, while Kownurko made seven in defeat.
The Hawks will remain in town for the weekend before taking on Richmond on Sunday afternoon. Game time against the Spiders is set for noon.
