Senior Isaiah Miles tied his career-highs with 24 points and 14 rebounds and junior DeAndre' Bembry scored the 1,000th point of his career as Saint Joseph's defeated Buffalo, 89-67, in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off at Hagan Arena.
Miles shot 7-for-11 from the field, and went 8-for-8 from the foul line, while keying a 21-0 run for the Hawks early in the first half. Sophomores Shavar Newkirk set a new career-high with 12 points as did James Demery with 13 points.
Bembry scored his 1,000th point on a drive at 10:13 of the first half. The junior, who entered the game with 998 career points in 68 games, became the 52nd Hawk to reach the milestone and the 22nd to do so in his third season.
Buffalo was led by Hamilton with 14 points, Lamonte Bearden with 13 points and Willie Conner with 10.
Buffalo took a quick 5-2 lead at 17:18 but then the Hawks rattled off 21 consecutive points in a span of just over five minutes. Freshman Pierfrancesco Oliva started the run with a three-pointer and Miles chipped in with seven points and Demery added five as the Hawks took their biggest lead, 21-5, at 11:17.
The Bulls ended their scoreless string at 11:06 on a three-pointer by Nikola Rakicevic.
The Hawks took their biggest lead of the half, 45-25, on a three-pointer by Miles with 1:35 remaining, as SJU owned a 46-28 edge at halftime.
Buffalo chipped away at the Hawks lead and cut it to 56-44 at 14:02 on a layup by Blake Hamilton. Saint Joseph's then scored eight in a row, with four from Demery, to regain the 20-point margin.
The Hawks shot 47 percent in the game and committed just six turnovers.
Saint Joseph's continues play in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off by taking on Florida at Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
