PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team fell to Seton Hall, 66-54, Saturday afternoon at Hagan Arena. The Hawks, who fell to 0-2 on the season, got a team-high 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots from senior Sarah Fairbanks.
After a back-and-forth first quarter that saw the Pirates (4-0) hold a 12-11 edge, the visitors used a 17-6 run to start the second quarter as Tabatha Richardson-Smith connected on her fourth three-pointer of the period to push the lead to 29-17 at 5:45.
The Hawks answered back with a three-pointer from freshman Alyssa Monaghan to make it 29-20, but Seton Hall closed the half on a 9-6 run to take a 38-26 advantage into the second half.
In the second half, Seton Hall pushed its lead to as many as 21, before the Hawks fought back. A layup by by Fairbanks capped a 9-0 run with 3:35 to go in the fourth quarter to make it 63-51, but that would be as close as SJU would get.
For the game, Saint Joseph's shot 20-of-60 from the field, connected on 4-of-11 from three-point range (36.4 percent) and 10-of-17 from the foul line (58.8 percent). Senior Ciara Andrews was the only other Hawk in double figures, finishing with 11 points and three steals.
At the other end, the Pirates got a game-high 21 points from Richardson-Smith and 16 points and 14 rebounds from Tiffany Jones. The pair combined to go 9-of-13 from three-point range, while the rest of the Pirates were 0-for-8. As a team, Seton Hall shot 25-of-64 from the floor (39.1 percent) and 7-of-12 from the foul line (58.3 percent).
Saint Joseph's returns to action on Tuesday when it begins Big 5 play at Villanova at 7 p.m.
