Women's Basketball To Induct Compain Into Hall of Fame At Banquet

PHILADELPHIA – A two-time Olympian and the Big Five Player of the Year in 1997, Mēgan Compain '97 will be inducted into the Saint Joseph's University Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in conjunction with the team's 39th Annual Awards Banquet on Wednesday, April 15 at Drexelbrook in Drexel Hill, Pa.

Among the most dynamic players in program history, Compain topped the Hawks in scoring in three consecutive seasons, while leading SJU to remarkable team success.  The Crimson and Gray advanced to the postseason in each of the Wanganui, New Zealand native's four seasons, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament (1994, 1995, 1997).  In addition, SJU captured three Philadelphia Big 5 titles, as well as the program's first Atlantic 10 Championship in 1997.  As a senior, she helped SJU set a school record by posting a 26-5 regular season mark, including 15-1 in the A-10.

Individually, Compain was a three-time All-Atlantic 10 selection, garnering First Team honors as a senior. She was named the A-10 Championship's Most Valuable Player in 1997 after leading the Hawks to their first Conference title.  A three-time First Team All-Big 5 honoree, as well, she was named the City Series Player of the Year in 1997.  She was inducted into the Big 5 Hall of Fame in 2003. Currently seventh on SJU's all-time scoring list with 1,497 points, she also ranks among the program's all-time leaders in rebounds, field goals, three-point field goals and free throws made.  She finished 14th in the nation in free thrown shooting (85.6 percent) in 1996 and her career free throw percentage of 82.4percent was the highest in program history when she graduated.

Professionally, Compain became the first Hawk to play in the WNBA, signing a free agent contract with the Utah Starzz.  Overall, she spent eight years playing abroad, including stints in Finland, Germany, Wales and New Zealand. Internationally, she represented New Zealand at both the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and the 2004 Olympic games in Athens.  Away from the court, Compain boasts a successful career in international sports marketing, including working with AND1, Roots Sports UK, and Adidas.  She is presently the Lead Sponsorship Manager for the New Zealand Rugby Union.
