Willocks Nets Two, But Field Hockey Falls at #3 Maryland

Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman Anna Willocks netted the first two goals of her collegiate career on Sunday afternoon, but the Saint Joseph's field hockey team ultimately fell to #3 Maryland, 6-2, at the Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.

Maryland (2-0) got the scoring started 3:27 into the contest as Faye Curran tallied off of a penalty corner.  Linnea Gonzales then doubled the Terrapins' lead midway through the half, tucking home a rebound to put UM ahead, 2-0.

Two more penalty corner opportunities resulted in goals for the Terrapins, as Alyssa Parker found the cage with 4:35 to play in the first half before Curran tallied her second of the day a minute and a half later to send the hosts into halftime with a 4-0 lead.

Anna Dessoye pushed the Maryland advantage to 5-0 just over five minutes into the second half.    Saint Joseph's (1-1) answered midway through the frame as Willocks notched her first goal of the day on a diving attempt from the left side of the arc.

Gonzales would tally another goal from a corner with 6:29 to play before Willocks converted a penalty corner of her own with 15 seconds on the clock to close out the scoring.  Graduate student Jenny Morris and freshman Monica Tice added assists.

Junior Amelia Deibler made 10 saves in the cage for the Hawks, while Jill Genovese and Sarah Holliday combined for one in a shared effort for the Terrapins.

"When we're outside the Philadelphia community, we often get asked what 'THWND' means," said head coach Lynn Farquhar after the game.  "Today was neat because we displayed that heart.  The University of Maryland is a top-quality hockey program and it was an honor to play the Terrapins at their stadium.  To score two goals in the second half says a lot about our team's potential."

Saint Joseph's returns to action on Friday, September 4, when the Hawks host local rival Drexel at Ellen Ryan Field.  The game is slated for a 3:00 p.m. start.
