Box Score MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's field hockey team matched a pair of program records on Friday afternoon as the Hawks took control early en route to an 8-0 win over Saint Louis at Ellen Ryan Field.
The eight goals tied a program record set back on September 12, 2004; the margin of victory equals the 8-0 win the Hawks posted over Robert Morris on that day.
Saint Joseph's (4-5 overall, 2-1 Atlantic 10) dominated right out of the gate, holding the Billikens to a single shot in the first half. Freshman Anna Willocks scored the first of her two goals in the day less than three minutes into the game, taking a cross from junior Melanie Colozzi and converting on the first shot of the game.
Midway through the frame, senior Nadia de Vries tucked home a rebound from a Willocks shot to double the SJU advantage. Eleven minutes later, sophomore Melissa Herd scored her first goal of the season on a feed from freshman Amy Smit to send the Hawks into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Jackalyn Pauling notched her second goal of the year just two minutes into the second half to push the lead to four before Willocks converted on a penalty corner from junior Emily Nonnemacher and freshman Monica Tice to make it a 5-0 game with 24:26 to go.
Junior Kerri Turk opened her account for the season two minutes later on an assist from Herd, and then scored her second of the game 11 minutes later on a deflection of a shot from Tice. Freshman Lauren Zimmerman finished the scoring off with her first collegiate goal, assisted by Tice, with 6:47 left in the game.
Tori Westhead made eight saves in the cage for Saint Louis (0-10 overall, 0-2 Atlantic 10), while junior Amelia Deibler made two to keep the clean sheet for SJU.
The Hawks are idle until October 4, when they travel to Bucknell for a non-conference tilt. Game time against the Bison is set for 3:00 p.m.
