PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's sophomore forward Dakota Mills scored twice to set a new single-season record for goals (16) and points (37) as the Hawks topped St. Bonaventure, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
With Sunday's victory, Saint Joseph's wrapped up Atlantic 10 play with a conference best 9-0-1 record and secured the top seed in this week's A-10 Championship and will face eighth seed and host Rhode Island at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
Looking to extend their unbeaten streak to 17 games, the Hawks (16-1-2) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Mills scored 1:34 into the match. Off a crossing pass from the left side of the box by freshman Gabrielle Vagnozzi, the Bonnies' goalkeeper made a play to catch the ball only to have it slip out of her grasp and allow Mills to sneak in a shot to give her team the lead.
St. Bonaventure (4-14-1, 1-9-0 A-10) tied the game at 1-1 at 15:12 off a shot by Sydney Cerza, but Mills would answer back shortly after.
Following a take-down inside the Bonnies' box, Mills converted a penalty kick to make it 2-1 at 17:38.
Saint Joseph's defense and goalkeeper Grace Bendon would make that score stand as they held the Bonnies to just two shots on goal from there to give the senior class of Meghan DiPippa, Emily Gingrich and Shannon Mulvey a victory in the final home game of their careers.
With the two goals on the day, Mills surpassed the previous single-season record for goals of 14 set by Ali Wean in 2006 and Gingrich in 2014. Additionally, Mills passed Wean's single-season points record (33), while Vagnozzi matched Gingrich's record for assists in a single-season with nine.
Making a pair of saves on the day, Bendon improved to 5-0-0 with the win.
