Turk, Helder Tally Twice as Field Hockey Routs La Salle, 6-2

Box Score

MERION STATION, Pa. – Senior forward Kerri Turk and sophomore back Joely Helder netted two goals apiece on Friday as the Saint Joseph's field hockey team cruised to a 6-2 win over La Salle at Ellen Ryan Field.

Junior forward Jackalyn Pauling scored for the fourth time in as many games against La Salle, while freshman Lydia Bariteau scored her first collegiate goal in the game, which did not count in the Atlantic 10 standings.

“It's empowering [scoring six goals in a game], because we do focus so much on our finishing,” Turk said after the game, her third multi-goal game in the last 15 days.  “Our teammates are trusting us and passing to us, so to be able to finish feels good.”

“Executing corners is important for us, and I think we did that well today,” Helder said, as four of the Hawks' six goals came as a result of penalty corners.

Saint Joseph's (9-4) opened the scoring six and a half minutes into the game as Turk redirected a corner from sophomore forward Anna Willocks into the cage for a 1-0.  Helder doubled the lead 55 seconds later, tucking home the rebound after Rachel Hartman made a save on freshman back Kathrin Bentz.

La Salle (5-7) got on the board with 24:49 to go in the half as Kendall Kreider scored on a penalty corner.

Turk struck again with 7:37 to play in the frame as Bentz sent her a pass after a corner opportunity; the senior found the back of the cage for her second of the day and seventh of the season to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead heading into halftime.

Less than three minutes into the second, Pauling continued her unique streak of scoring against the Explorers, dribbling into the circle and around Hartman to notch her fourth goal of the season.  Pauling has tallied a goal in all four games she has played against La Salle, dating back to 2014.

Helder then scored her second of the day, third in the last two games, and fourth of the season as she redirected a ball from Bentz on a corner to make it 5-1 with 27:58 to go.

Bariteau opened her account 14 minutes later, dribbling past the Explorer defense and beating Hartman to the far post to extend the advantage to five.

Devin Muracco closed out the scoring with just less than 10 minutes to play as Kreider found her in front of the cage for her third goal of the season.

Senior Amelia Deibler made six saves on the day, improving her record to 3-1 on the year.  Hartman made seven in defeat for La Salle.

“We just have to play our own game and give it our all every time, whether it's a conference game or not, and we did that today,” Turk said.

“As our coaches said, this was a game about us, and we needed to push ourselves,” Helder said.  “That way we can take what we learned from this game into our next game.”

Saint Joseph's hits the road for its next three games.  First is a trip to Rutgers on Sunday, before conference games at Saint Francis (Pa.) and Lock Haven next weekend.
