PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's sophomore Chelsea Woods scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Hawks' offensive explosion in Wednesday's 87-54 victory over Davidson at Hagan Arena.
After falling behind 5-2 to start the game, Saint Joseph's (13-14, 7-8 Atlantic 10) roared back to take control of the game and never allowed the Wildcats a chance to get back into it.
Using a 15-0 run, the Hawks opened a 17-5 advantage as junior Kathleen Fitzpatrick found Woods for a fastbreak layup at 2:54 of the first quarter to cap the spurt. Saint Joseph's hit 5-of-10 from the field during that stretch, including a pair of three-pointers from Fitzpatrick, while it held Davidson 0-for-6 and caused four turnovers.
Up 21-10 after the first period, the Hawks continued to pull away in the second and third quarters as they outscored Davidson 47-24, opening a 68-34 on a three-pointer by redshirt freshman Sarah Veilleux to end the third quarter.
Davidson (11-17, 5-10 A-10) would get no closer than 31 in the final quarter as the Hawks closed off the home portion of their schedule and gave their senior class of Sarah Fairbanks, Ciara Andrews and Jordan Strode a victory in their final game on Hawk Hill.
For the game, Saint Joseph's shot 46.8 percent from the field (29-of-62), 38.9 percent from three-point range (7-of-18) and 81.5 percent from the foul line (22-of-27). The Hawks also outrebounded the Wildcats 49-16, including 16 offensive boards that led to 15 points.
Going 9-of-12 from the field and 5-of-5 from the foul line, Woods surpassed her previous career mark as she finished with 23 points to go with six rebounds and three steals. Veilleux added a career-best 10 points off the bench, while Fitzpatrick was 4-of-8 from deep for 12 points. Fairbanks was the fourth Hawk in double figures, adding 10 points, with rookie Alyssa Monaghan posting a game-high seven rebounds and six assists to go with seven points.
At the other end, Davidson shot just 29.7 percent overall (19-of-64), 46.7 percent from behind the arc (7-of-15) and 81.8 percent from the foul line (9-of-11). Diona Johnson and Kianna Speight each finished with 11 points for the Wildcats.
The Hawks cap the regular season this Saturday at Richmond at 2 p.m.
