RICHMOND, Va. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team suffered a tough 7-0 defeat in what turned out to be a very testy match at Richmond on Saturday afternoon.
“A strong team and an unsettling home court advantage made a close match seem more of a trouncing than it really was,” head coach Ian Crookenden said after the match. “Excellent individual singles performances in the second and third flights brought out the best play and worst support from the home team. I was proud of the sportsmanship and personal behavior of our team. They represented our University with great play and attitude on and off the court.”
After Richmond took the first and third doubles flights to secure the first point of the day, senior Renier Moolman took his second flight match to three sets. Moolman dropped the first set, 6-3, before taking the second by the same score. In the end, however, UR's Alexandre Felisa came away with a 6-3 win in the third to give the Spiders a point.
Junior Kyle Chalmers also played a tight match, falling to Canyon Teague in the third flight by a 7-5, 6-4 score.
The Hawks will look to bounce back from the defeat on Sunday when they travel to George Mason. play is set to begin at noon.
