Box Score MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – Sophomore Sara Hayes notched her first collegiate hat trick and junior goalkeeper Victoria Kammerinke set a new Saint Joseph's record for victories as the 12th-ranked Hawk field hockey team cruised past Saint Louis, 5-0, at SportPort International on Saturday afternoon.
The win is the 42nd of Kammerinke's career, topping the previous mark of 41 held by Rebecca Cunfer, who suited up for the Hawks between 2004 and 2007.
Saint Joseph's (14-2 overall, 7-0 Atlantic 10) opened the scoring just under eight minutes into the game as senior Anna Willocks took a pass from freshman Tonya Botherway and converted for the 13th time this season to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Botherway came through with another assist midway through the half, this time finding sophomore Sara Hayes for her sixth goal of the season and a 2-0 SJU advantage in the 22nd minute.
The second half saw more Hawk dominance, with Hayes notching her second of the game on a pass from sophomore Emily Henry with 23:30 to go in the half.
Saint Louis (3-11 overall, 1-6 Atlantic 10) would register its first shot of the game soon after, but Kammerinke was there to keep the clean sheet intact. Hayes then capped off the natural hat trick with a tip-in on a corner for a 4-0 Hawk lead.
Willocks would add an assist to her ledger just about three minutes from full time when she found sophomore Emily Peters for her fourth goal of the season on a tip-in to close out the scoring.
Sasha Sander made six stops for the Billikens in defeat as the Hawks outshot their hosts 19-2 and earned 11 penalty corners without conceding one.
Kammerinke made the only save required of her to post her Division I-leading ninth shutout of the year, a new single-season school record.
The Hawks return home for their final two regular season games. Saint Joseph's will close out Atlantic 10 play with a game against La Salle on Friday, October 26, before hosting nationally-ranked Syracuse a day later. Saturday's game will also mark Senior Day, when the Hawks will honor Willocks, Joely Helder, and Monica Tice in a pre-game ceremony.
