BRONX, N.Y. – Led by the All-East performances of sophomore Bobby Hastie, graduate student captain Collin Crilly, sophomore Matthew Scarpill, and senior Will Sponaugle, the Saint Joseph's men's cross country squad closed its season with a fifth-place finish in a field of 18 squads at the 2018 IC4A Championship, held at Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday morning. The Hawks totaled 150 points with an average 4.97-mile run time of 23:44.40.
The fifth-place finish is all the more impressive considering SJU raced without junior Zach Michon, the Hawks' top runner all season long, due to illness.
Hastie led the way with a 25th-place showing in a field of 157 in 23:38, followed closely by Crilly in 26th (23:39) and Scarpill in 29th (23:42). Sponaugle claimed the 40th spot (23:51) to become the fourth Hawk to earn All-East honors for placing in the field's top 40. Crilly's All-East honor marks the third of his career, while Hastie, Scarpill, and Sponaugle all earned their first.
Senior Sean Macpherson crossed in 23:52 for 42nd to close out the scoring for the Crimson and Gray while senior Shawn Hutchison (68th, 24:26) and Justin Branco (24:38) finished as SJU's #6 and #7 runners.
Crilly, Sponaugle, Macpherson, Hutchison, Branco, and senior Jack Daly (81st, 24:41), who finished as SJU's #8 runner, closed their collegiate cross country careers with their performances in the Championship Race.
Freshman Ben Bunch led eight Hawks in the Coaches Race (4.97-mile) with a time of 25:02 for 11th in the field of 66.
The meet officially concludes the 2018 cross country season. The 2018-19 men's track and field indoor campaign will kick off on Saturday, December 1, at the Fastrack Season Opener in Staten Island, N.Y. (Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex).
