Box Score A game-tying three-pointer by Saint Joseph's Sarah Veilleux missed its mark as George Washington held off a late rally by the Hawks, 49-46, Tuesday evening at Hagan Arena.
Fighting back from an 11-point deficit in the third quarter, Saint Joseph's (14-13, 9-6 Atlantic 10) came back to tie the game at 41-41 on a layup by graduate student Amanda Fioravanti with 7:12 to play.
With the game tied at 44 apiece, the Colonials' Brianna Cummings gave her team a 47-44 advantage on a three-point play with 2:34 to go.
A layup by Fioravanti and a defensive stop gave the Hawks a chance to take the lead with 26 seconds to play.
Down 47-46, the Hawks' Chelsea Woods drove to the basket, only to be denied and George Washington to grab the rebound.
Mei-Lyn Bautista increased the Colonials' lead to 49-46 with a pair of free throws with under five seconds remaining, but the Hawks would have a final shot out of a timeout.
Setting up for a final chance, Saint Joseph's would be able to get a look for a game-tying three as Veilleux snuck free into the left corner, but her shot fell just short at the horn.
In a defensive contest, Saint Joseph's finished the game shooting 37.5 percent from the field (18-of-48), 25 percent from three-point range (3-for-12) and 87.5 percent from the foul line (7-of-8).
Individually, Fioravanti paced the Hawks with a team-best 11 points, six assists and six rebounds, while Veilleux was the only other SJU player in double figures as she finished with 10 points.
Cummings and Camila Tapias each had 11 points apiece for the Colonials as GW finished the game shooting 37.8 percent from the floor (17-of-45) and 23.5 percent from three-point range (4-of-17), but connected on all 11 free throws.
Saint Joseph's caps the regular season this Saturday at Fordham at 2 p.m.
