Box Score NEWTON, Mass. – Senior Pepa Serrano fired home the game-winning goal with just 46.6 seconds to go in the fourth quarter as the 11th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team won a thriller over #17 Boston College, 5-4, at the BC Field Hockey Complex on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Boston College (4-5) had the run of play early on and took the lead with 5:44 to go in the first quarter on a goal by Charlotte Von Huelsen.
• Saint Joseph's (8-1) answered late in the quarter, potting two goals just 52 seconds apart. Tonya Botherway tipped home her seventh goal of the year on a penalty corner pass from Kathrin Bentz to draw the Hawks level before Sara Hayes found Emily Sayre in front of the cage with just 44.3 seconds left to give SJU a 2-1 lead after one.
• The Eagles would get an equalizer with six minutes to go in the half after a turnover led to a Brigid Wood goal.
• Margo Carlin put the hosts back in front shortly after the break, but the Hawks answered four minutes later when Bentz and Botherway connected again on another corner.
• The Hawks looked to have gone ahead again, but a highlight reel goal from Kayla Walker was disallowed due to obstruction. Shortly after, Carlin tipped in her second of the day and 10th of the season to put the hosts back in front.
• The Crimson and Gray replied with 48 seconds remaining in the third, as Serrano found some space for a blast that was stopped by BC goalkeeper Jonna Kennedy. Kennedy couldn't corral the rebound, however, and as the ball trickled through on goal, Kacie Patton slammed it into the cage for an equalizer to send the teams into the fourth quarter on level terms.
• After combining for eight goals in three quarters, neither side could find the cage until the final minute. Victoria Kammerinke made a big stop on a corner attempt before Kennedy answered with consecutive saves on Botherway and Emily Peters.
• Then, after a previous corner bore no fruit, the Hawks earned one last attempt, and Serrano cashed it in. After the insertion, Kate Blincoe gave it off to the senior, who notched her third goal of the season to put SJU ahead.
• Boston College had one last opportunity, earning a penalty corner with 7.7 ticks on the clock. Kammerinke turned away an effort by Fusine Govaert before one last shot went wide and the Hawks could finally exhale.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• BC held a 20-16 advantage in shots on the day, but the Hawks were able to put a higher percentage of their attempts on goal, scoring on half their on-target efforts.
• The Hawks earned a 9-5 edge in attacking corners, including five in the fourth quarter alone. SJU turned three of those attempts into goals.
• Saint Joseph's showed a flair for the dramatic on Sunday; three of the Hawks' five goals came in the final minute of their respective quarters.
