Michon Wins Twice, DMR Second, Men's Track Eighth at A-10 Indoor Championships

Senior Zach Michon celebrates winning the A-10 mile for the second year in a row on Sunday.
KINGSTON, R.I. – After defending his title in the mile and going on to earn a second gold medal in the 3000m, Saint Joseph's men's track and field senior standout Zach Michon was selected the meet's Most Outstanding Men's Track Performer at the 2020 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships, held at the University of Rhode Island's Mackal Fieldhouse this weekend. Overall, the Hawks totaled 44 points to finish eighth in a field of 10 squads.

Michon had taken on the challenge of the A-10's rigorous mile/3000m double, with the mile beginning at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday and the 3000m beginning just two hours and 20 minutes later at 1:35 p.m., last season. He won the mile but came up third in the 3000m.

That wasn't going to happen again in his final go-around.

The senior crossed the finish line of the mile in 4:12.96, edging out Rhode Island's Kellen Waters by .56 seconds to claim his second consecutive A-10 gold medal in the event; Michon didn't lead until the last 100m of the race in an attempt to save energy for the 3000m. It worked, as he then went on to defeat George Washington's Wesley Robinson in the 3000m with a winning time of 8:26.12.

"Going into the A-10 meet, I had a big target on my back," said Michon following the conclusion of Sunday's awards ceremony. "It's a lot of pressure to try and defend a title when the A-10 is such a competitive conference. It felt great to be able to execute an effective race to get me the win in the mile. Coming back soon after in the 3000m came down to me just trusting my strength and being aggressive. My training had prepared me for races like that and being able to run back-to-back races. I'm grateful for Coach Glavin and Coach Tarello for pushing me to achieve this level of success."

"He earned it," said head coach Mike Glavin of Michon's Track Performer of the Meet recognition. "Zach Earned every second and every step that he has accomplished. Nothing comes to him by accident. He does so many things right."

Michon's two championship performances earned 20 points for the Crimson and Gray, 46 percent of SJU's total for the meet.

Junior Matthew Scarpill followed Michon's footsteps in coming up big in points.

On Saturday evening, the Distance Medley Relay showed what it means to run like Hawks by turning in an unconventional second-place finish for eight points. Matthew Coffey led off the relay but was clipped from behind on Lap 2 on the backstretch. The freshman got back up in last place by 30m but went on to run like an absolute veteran to get the squad back to ninth at the handoff. Sophomores Michael Welde and Michael Szwed took care of the 400m and 800m legs before Scarpill took the baton in fifth.

Head coach Mike Glavin figured fourth place was the goal at that point . . . but Scarpill had other plans.

The junior chased down all but URI for the runner-up finish in 10:14.98.

"My leg was a continuation of the other three," said Scarpill following the race. "Despite the fall in the beginning, everyone worked SJU back into the race, and there was no chance of me not doing the same. I had a big gap between me and the leaders, so I slowly worked my way up. With 400m to go, I threw in a surge to break the people battling for second place and sealed the deal. It felt smooth and easy!"

"The DMR ran heroically," added head coach Mike Glavin. "No other way to put it. The top three teams seemed to be gone to me, but Matt [Scarpill] had other ideas. He didn't go up there to get fifth."

Scarpill went on to place third in the mile on Sunday, crossing in 4:14.90 to earn his first A-10 medal in an individual event. Between the DMR (eight points) and mile (six points), Scarpill added 14 points to SJU's total.

Additional individual scoring performances came out of the 500m and 800m, as senior Will Davies (1:06.44) and sophomore Kyle Magee (1:06.56) went seventh and eighth in the 500m finals for three points and junior Joshua Richard went seventh (1:58.57) in the 800m finals for two points.

Saint Joseph's saw its final five points come from the 4x800m relay on Sunday afternoon, as sophomore George Steinhoff, Richard, sophomore Javier Linares, and Szwed cruised to a season-best time of 7:45.91 to place fourth in a field of nine relay groups.

Five Hawks just missed qualifications in their respective individual events on Saturday, including a trio out of the 4x800m relay legs; Steinhoff finished ninth in the 1000m preliminaries (2:31.74) to miss advancing to Sunday's final by just .14 seconds, Linares finished 10th in the 800m preliminaries (1:57.39) to miss advancing to Sunday's finals by .55 seconds, and Szwed finished 10th in the 500m preliminaries (1:07.30) to miss advancing to Sunday's finals by .49 seconds.

Welde added a 10th-place finish in the 400m preliminaries (51.12), just .32 seconds off from making the finals, while sophomore Ira Daly followed behind Steinhoff with a 1000m time of 2:31.93 for 10th.

Junior Vincent Giordano turned in a pair of collegiate-best performances on Saturday, placing 11th (7.11 PR) in the 60m preliminaries and 13th (21' 10" PR) in the long jump finals.

Freshman Ladi Bamgbose led a quartet of Hawks in Saturday's 200m preliminaries, crossing in 22.88 for 15th.

Colin Gallagher led a pair of senior Hawks in Saturday's 5000m final with a collegiate-best indoor time of 15:25.01 for 18th; Gallagher destroyed his previous PR in the event by 7.45 seconds.
