BOSTON, Mass. – Former Saint Joseph's short stick defensive midfielder Anthony Joaquim '17 (Guelph, Ontario) has been selected by the Philadelphia Barage in the First Round of the 2020 Major League Lacrosse Supplemental Draft. The Barrage played in Philadelphia from the 2004 to 2008 MLL seasons and won three national championships and 62% of their games during that time and is returning to Philadelphia in time for this upcoming season.
"I'm excited for the opportunity to play for the Philadelphia Barrage," said Joaquim on Wednesday afternoon. "Playing professionally for the indoor and outdoor game in the City of Brotherly Love is a dream come true! Philadelphia has become my second home ever since I attended Hawk Hill. All my coaches and teammates throughout the years at Saint Joseph's have had a positive impact in helping me reach the professional level. I wouldn't be where I am today without them."
The 2020 MLL season will run from May 30 through August 15. Joaquim and the Barrage will open the season on the road against the Connecticut Hammerheads on May 30 and will host the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the home opener on June 6.
Joaqium began his professional lacrosse career with the New England Black Wolves of the National Lacrosse League in 2018 and has played the last two seasons for the Philadelphia Wings.
A 2017 graduate of Saint Joseph's University, Joaquim played in all 62 games, which ties for second in program history in career games played, over his four-year career as a Hawk and totaled 140 ground balls and 35 caused turnovers to go with 26 points on 16 goals and 10 assists.
Upon playing in his first Major League Lacrosse game this summer, Joaquim will join Kyle Cain '18 as just the second Hawk in program history to appear in an MLL game. He will also become the first Hawk to play in both the MLL and NLL.
