PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph's head coach
Mike Glavin is thrilled to announce the return of short sprinters
David Bryant and
Justin Moscoe and distance runners
Zach Michon and
John Walker for next year's track and field seasons. These four Hawks have decided to take advantage of the NCAA Division I Council's ruling to grant an additional year of outdoor eligibility for all spring sports student-athletes due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The extension of eligibility was granted after the NCAA canceled all spring sports in March.
Walker will return for both the 2020-21 indoor and outdoor campaigns as the distance standout redshirted his indoor season in 2019-20. Moscoe is pursuing an opportunity to race the indoor season (racing sparingly in 2017-18) as well as outdoor while Bryant and Michon will race the 2021 outdoor season.
"Having these four guys back adds to the team in multiple and significant ways," said Glavin. "Start with the level of leadership they bring, in what they say, what they do, and how they do it. Then move on to how these four have added to the quality of team performances at the Atlantic 10 and IC4A levels… all scorers at the Conference and Northeast championship meets. I guess you could say this is a win-win-win-win for SJU men's track and field."
A two-time Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar First Team selection, Bryant has raced on SJU's outdoor 4x100m conference relay since stepping foot on Hawk Hill and has led the Crimson and Gray to scoring performances at all three meets. He is also an IC4A All-East Team selection in the 4x100m relay and owns a share of the school record in the outdoor Sprint Medley Relay.
Moscoe is a six-time scorer and three-time medalist at the conference level and has earned four IC4A All-East Team accolades, which includes a second leg performance on the sixth-place DMR at this year's IC4A indoor meet. Moscoe is coming off of a 2019-20 indoor season in which he destroyed his PRs in his main events, going for 22.15 in the 200m and 48.38 in the 400m.
"David and Justin have been captains of the short sprints group for two years... something rarely seen on this team," said Glavin. "David has been a consistent, steadying influence on our 4x100m relay team while Justin is a leader on the 4x400m relay team. Both have raced themselves onto our Top Ten Performers list for SJU indoor track and field."
Prior to COVID-19 canceling the 2020 outdoor season, Michon was on pace to close out a career for the ages having won the A-10's cross country individual title in the fall before taking the A-10's mile and 3000m indoor titles in the winter. Michon is an 11-time conference scorer (six-time medalist and three-time champion) and has raced open events at IC4As five times, earning All-East Team honors in the mile in 2018.
The Saint Joseph's 2019-20 Class of 1950 Award Winner and school record-holder in the indoor 3000m and outdoor 4xMile Relay, Michon will have his eyes set on a return to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds after qualifying in the 1500m in 2019.
Coming off a promising junior campaign in 2018-19, Walker was sidelined for the 2019-20 track and field seasons after pushing through injury to help the 2019 cross country squad through the conference championship meet. Walker is a six-time conference scorer, medaling in five of those events, and is an integral leg on SJU's Distance Medley Relay having anchored the Hawks to the gold medal in 2018-19. Walker is a four-time IC4A participant and shares the school record in the outdoor 4xMile Relay.
"This duo returning for a fifth year together outdoors is a scary thought... unless you're their coach!" said Glavin of Michon and Walker. "Both have run themselves onto the Top Ten Performers list for multiple events in indoor track and field, and Michon has added himself to several events on the same list for outdoor track and field. They are both factors and forces in the Atlantic 10 on the track, and should add nicely to some great outdoor relays."
