Huber and McTamney Combine for 50 in Women's Basketball's Comeback win at Florida Tech

Box Score

MELBORUNE, Fla. – Jess Huber's and Anna McTamney's combined 50-point effort helped the USciences women's basketball team erase a 13-point second quarter deficit in the Devils' 73-64 win at Florida Tech on Wednesday night.

University of the Sciences' first game in 11 days, it was also the Devils' first of three games in the Sunshine State in four days.

Huber's game-high 27 points were one shy of her career-best. The graduate student made 8-of-16 from the field, 5-of-10 from 3-point range and 6-of-8 from the foul line.

After scoring a combined two points in her first two collegiate games, McTamney broke out with 23 on a perfect shooting performance from the floor in just 21 minutes off the bench. She made all seven of her field goal attempts and all three of her 3-pointers, while also connecting on 6-of-8 free throws.

University of the Sciences made as many free throws as Florida Tech attempted, 17, including its last 12 points coming from the foul line over the final 2:09 as the Panthers tried to comeback.

The Devils' next two-leading scorers also came off the bench, with Dayna Balasa and Isla Brennan contributing eight and six, respectively.

Balasa also matched Taylor Hamm (team-high seven rebounds) for the team-lead with three assists.

FT established a 10-point advantage, 16-6, 6:02 in and despite USciences making it a six-point game, 23-17, at the end of the first quarter, the Panthers scored the first seven of the second to take the first of two 13-point leads, 30-17, with 5:58 left in the half.

The second came at 32-19 3:54 ahead of break, before McTamney and Brennan made back-to-back 3-pointers to start an 11-2 surge to end the half.

Following Florida Tech's lone basket in the stretch, Huber closed the quarter with the final five points, including a buzzer-beating layup for just a four-point deficit, 30-34, at half.

Huber then scored USciences' first eight points of the second half, the final three a triple 3:36 out of the locker room that completed a 19-6 run and gave the Devils' their first lead, 38-37, since the first beginning of the first quarter.

Florida Tech momentarily regained its advantage, but back-to-back layups by McTamney put USciences on top for good, 42-40, with 4:09 showing.

The Devils led 46-43 after three, but the Panthers would get as close as one, 48-47, 2:10 into the final period, only to have McTamney and Huber combine for all 13 points in a 13-5 run that made it a two-possession game for good.

University of the Sciences takes Thanksgiving off before facing Bemidji State in a neutral matchup on Friday at 5 p.m.
