Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – The USciences women's basketball team could not quite complete a third comeback in four days, as the Devils missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer to end their Florida road-trip with a 58-55 loss to Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday afternoon.
After double-digit comebacks on Wednesday and Friday, University of the Sciences trailed by as many as eight midway through the second quarter and by seven, 31-24, at the half.
Jess Huber outscored CSP 13-12 on her own in the third though, combining with Harlem Jennings for USciences' first 15 points of the period, before Isla Brennan's 3-pointer gave the Devils' their first lead since the first quarter, 42-40, with 2:21 showing.
Huber followed with a triple of her own to match University of the Sciences' largest advantage, and the Devils led 45-43 after three quarters after outscoring the Bears 21-12 in the stanza.
The two teams traded five lead changes in the opening seven minutes of the fourth, with the game being played within a single possession until five straight CSP points made the score 53-49 with 2:21 remaining.
Huber once again sparked University of the Sciences with the next four points, tying the score on a jumper 56 seconds later.
She fouled out on the ensuing defensive possession though, and after making the first free throw the Bears grabbed the offensive rebound on the missed second, leading to a layup.
Kendall Keyes made it a one-point game on a jumper with 50 seconds to play, but CSP answered with a jumper of its own 33 seconds later and USciences would miss the potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Huber scored 19 of her game-high 20 points, eight more than any other player, in the second half, while falling one rebound shy of her career-best with six.
The graduate student made three 3-pointers to move into seventh in program history with 162 for her career.
Huber was the only Devil in double-figures, as Keyes had nine, Brennan had eight, Jennings had seven and Taylor Hamm added six.
Hamm also led all players with eight rebounds, while tying her career-best with a team-high six assists.
Bria Johnson notably made her collegiate debut.
Rebounding, as it did on the missed free throw, played a large role on the afternoon, with Concordia-St. Paul holding a 41-29 edge on the boards. The Bears also outscored USciences 28-18 in the paint.
The Devils have a week off before opening up Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play at Georgian Court next Saturday.
