Field Hockey Rises to 11th in Final NFHCA Coaches Poll

11/9/2021 12:00:00 PM

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Saint Joseph's field hockey team moved up to 11th in the final National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I Coaches Poll of the season, which was released on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hawks rose one spot after claiming their fourth Atlantic 10 title in five seasons last week.  Saint Joseph's set new Atlantic 10 Championship records for goals and margin of victory when the Hawks routed Richmond, 8-1, on Friday before topping VCU, 1-0, for the league crown on Saturday.

The Hawks met three teams in the top five this season and four out of the top eight.  Rutgers moved up two spots to #1 by virtue of its Big Ten tournament title, while Penn State jumped three spots to fourth and Maryland fell one spot to fifth.  North Carolina rose two places to eighth.  Saint Joseph's knocked off both UNC and Rutgers in the same weekend in September at Ellen Ryan Field.

SJU also topped Boston College earlier this season, which ended the year at #14, while falling to #17 Delaware and #20 UMass.

The Hawks will head to Rutgers for their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history; Saint Joseph's will meet #9 Liberty at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, with the winner advancing to meet either the host and top-seeded Scarlet Knights or the winner of an Opening Round game between Delaware and Fairfield on Sunday.
