Box Score PHILADELPHIA- The USciences women's basketball team once again leaned on its defense, holding Goldey-Beacom to just six points over a stretch of 13:08 to end the second quarter and begin the third in a 55-34 win over the Lightning on Saturday afternoon at Bobby Morgan Arena.
The Devils limited GBC to just 23.1 percent shooting (12-of-52) for the contest, as its past two opponents have combined for just 67 points after Wilmington shot 28.0 percent (14-of-50) on Tuesday.
After the opening 16-plus minutes were played within a possession, Jess Huber's 3-pointer 3:33 ahead of the break provided the first four-point advantage of the afternoon, 19-15, before Harlem Jennings capped eight unanswered with two free throws to make the score 23-15 with 1:36 left in the second.
Goldey-Beacom closed the half with a triple but those were its only points of the final 6:35 of the quarter, and the Lightning would score just three points in the first 6:33 of the third.
This allowed University of the Sciences to take the game's first double-digit lead, 30-19, on Kendall Keyes' triple 2:22 out of the locker room, and GBC could only manage to get within nine points from that point on.
Each time the Lightning did the Devils had an immediate response, and a Dayna Balasa 3-pointer and Anna McTamney jumper in the final minute brought the score to 41-27 after three.
McTamney led all players with 15 points, with Huber (14) and Keyes (11) also finishing in double-figures.
Huber notably made two 3-pointers to move into sixth in program history with 169 for her career.
Taylor Hamm had game-highs of 13 rebounds, four assists and three steals, the latter of which tied a career-best.
Shannon May set a career-best in boards for the second game in a row with 10, as the Devils outrebounded the Lightning 47-37, while Juliana Gura blocked a career and game-high three shots.
USciences closes out a three-game home-stand next Sunday, hosting its final non-conference contest at 2 p.m. versus Saint Anselm.
