Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The USciences women's basketball team scored on its first five possessions and made its first six shots, establishing a lead it would never relinquish in a 61-50 wire-to-wire win over Saint Anselm on Sunday afternoon.
Jess Huber netted the first five before Kendall Keyes followed a Harlem Jennings jumper with her third 3-pointer in the opening 4:20 to establish a 16-5 advantage.
Saint Anselm scored the next four to momentarily get within seven, but the Devils continued to hold on to the double-digit lead after Jennings' layup to close out the first quarter made the score 24-14.
University of the Sciences then scored the first seven points of the second, with five straight from Anna McTamney establishing a first-half-high 17-point advantage, 31-14, with 7:12 left.
The Hawks got as close as 11 with six straight points, but Huber responded with five of her own and Isla Brennan's layup sent the Devils into the locker room ahead 38-22.
Huber and Taylor Hamm split the opening eight points of the second half, establishing a game-high 24-point lead, 46-34, just 3:43 out of the break.
University of the Sciences would score just two points over the next 10:21 though, and Saint Anselm fought all the back to within seven, 48-41, with 6:30 remaining after scoring the opening seven points of the fourth.
Jennings grabbed an offensive rebound the following possession though, and found Keyes for a crucial 3-pointer to halt the momentum.
Keyes also scored the next basket, and the Hawks could get no closer than eight as the Devils iced the game with eight free throws over the final 3:07.
Keyes made four of those foul shots, capping a career-high 22-point performance with a nine-point fourth quarter after scoring her first 13 in the first.
She made 4-of-6 3-pointers on a day in which USciences made 7-of-14 as a team, compared to Saint Anselm's 2-of-14.
Huber was the only other Devil in double-figures with 18 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting and 4-of-4 foul shots, while also leading all players with four assists.
McTamney added nine points in 13 minutes off the bench, while Hamm led USciences with six rebounds.
Juliana Gura matched Huber with five boards, and she also had three assists in 11 minutes off the bench.
With tomorrow's scheduled game at Adelphia postponed, the Devils next take the court on Dec. 29 at Bentley for the first of three games in three days.
