Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The USciences men's basketball team rallied late for the second time in four days, defeating Wilmington 67-66 thanks Jordan Davidson's game-winning 3-pointer with 17 seconds remaining in the Devils' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) home-opener at Bobby Morgan Arena on Tuesday night.
Two Wildcat free throws produced just the game's second three-possession lead, 56-48, with 5:22 to play, but Austin Kennedy quickly made it a two-possession game again with a triple 23 seconds later.
Davidson and Joemel McNair took over from there, combining for USciences' final 16 points as McNair followed five straight points by Davidson with six straight of his own, each basket cutting a four-point deficit to two.
The final one made the score 66-64 with 47 seconds left and after a defensive stop, it was McNair who found Davidson for the game-winner.
McNair was also the primary defender on the penultimate defensive possession, a forced turnover after Omari Salvi came to help.
University of the Sciences would miss the front-end of a one-and-one in the final seconds, but a Wilmington floater following a full-court pass hit the front rim to secure the victory.
McNair paced the Devils with a season-best 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting in 27 minutes off the bench to fall one point shy of the game-high.
Tommy Gardler also came off the bench to score 13 points, USciences' second-highest total, as Devils reserves outscored Wilmington's 35-16.
That, along with University of the Sciences outscoring the Wildcats 26-6 in points off turnovers, were the Devils' two significant advantages on the stat sheet. USciences turned the ball over just nine times, while forcing 21.
Davidson recorded a game-high three steals, in addition to finishing in double-figures with 10 points.
Salvi neared a double-double with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Kennedy led all players with a career-best seven assists.
University of the Sciences' largest lead all night came after scoring the first four points, but a 14-3 Wilmington run produced the night's first three-possession advantage 7:43 in. That three-possession advantage lasted just 40 seconds though, and McNair's jumper 1:06 ahead of the break sent USciences into the locker room with a 29-28 lead.
The two teams would trade seven lead changes in the opening 7:31 of the second, before Wilmington secured the first of three six-point leads, 49-43, with 9:59 to go.
The third of those turned into the game's second three-possession advantage on the two free throws with 5:22 remaining.
University of the Sciences continues its three-game home-stand on Saturday, hosting Goldey-Beacom at 1 p.m.
