Box Score WILMINGTON, Del. – In a game played within two points for nearly the entire final 10:58, the USciences men's basketball team came up just short in a 64-63 loss at Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday night.
Zachary Foley's offensive rebound and eventual layup put the Devils ahead one final time, 56-54, with 4:31 remaining.
Goldey-Beacom tied the game back up on the ensuing trip down the court and after two empty trips for USciences, it was an offensive rebound that led to the Lightning regaining the lead, 58-56, with 2:47 to go.
The two teams combined to score on three straight possessions, with respective baskets by Matthew McCaffrey and Tommy Gardler knotting the score at 58 and 60, the latter coming with 1:51 showing.
University of the Sciences got a defensive stop but a turnover led to two GBC free throws that put the Lightning on top for good.
The Devils would miss a go-ahead 3-pointer, before Goldey sealed the victory with 12 seconds left on a layup late in the shot clock.
Gardler led University of the Sciences with a season-best 17 points, with Jordan Davidson (10 points) also joining him in double-figures.
McCaffrey (4-of-4 field goals) and Sean Simon each added nine, while Foley had eight points and team-highs of six rebounds and a season-best six assists.
Austin Kennedy had eight points too, while Jaakko Juusela contributed six boards and a season-high five assists.
University of the Sciences fell one assist shy of a season-best with 18, while the Devils also shot a season-high 91.7 percent (11-of-12) from the foul line.
USciences also made double the amount of 3-pointers as Goldey-Beacom, 10-5, but was outscored 32-22 in the paint.
The Lightning quickly jumped out a game-high 10-point advantage, 16-6, less than six minutes in, but back-to-back triples by Simon tied the score at 20 with 8:05 remaining in the first half.
A Foley and-one gave USciences its first lead, 28-27, 2:32 later, and the game was played within a single possession until a GBC and-one made the score 48-43 with 13:28 to play.
A Kennedy 3-pointer at the 10:58 mark brought the Devils within two, 50-48, and the game was played within two points until the late Lightning layup, as the two teams traded seven ties and four lead changes down the stretch.
University of the Sciences returns home for the first time in two weeks to host city-rival Holy Family this Saturday at 3 p.m.
