Men's Basketball Suffers 85-84 Heartbreak in Last-Ever Game

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – The University of the Sciences men's basketball's team had one final shot for a fairy-tail ending for the program.

A last second 3-pointer at the buzzer was unfortunately off the mark in an 85-84 loss to Chestnut Hill in the program's final game on Saturday afternoon at Bobby Morgan Arena.

In a game that featured 16 lead changes and 10 ties, the Devils went ahead 83-77 with just 1:51 remaining when Matthew McCaffrey set-up Austin Kennedy for a layup.

The Griffins immediately answered with a 3-pointer just seven seconds later though, beginning what would become a game-ending 8-1 run.

Tommy Gardler made a free throw to re-establish a four-point advantage, 84-80, 10 seconds later, but USciences would not score again.

Chestnut Hill made 3-of-4 foul shots over its next two possessions and after a second consecutive stop, the Griffins took their first lead since the 10:29 mark of the second half on a layup with just 12 seconds to go.

That setup the final shot for University of the Sciences.

Prior to the contest, the Devils honored their senior class of Kennedy, Jordan Davidson and Sean Simon.

Simon and Kennedy were USciences' two-leading scorers with 20 and 17, respectively, combining to make 11-of-22 from beyond the arc.

Simon notably moved into seventh in the program's single-season history with 63 triples on the year.

Davidson led the Devils with a career-best seven assists, six rebounds and two steals, to go along with nine points.

Javon Gordon came off the bench to make four of his five 3-point attempts en route to a season-best 13 points in just 10 minutes.

University of the Sciences made 17-of-36 3-pointers as a team, one shy of the recorded program record (since 2005-06) set earlier this season.

McCaffrey tied a season-best with 11 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting, while Gardler added 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting off the bench to make it five Devils in double-figures.

The entire first half was played within two possessions, even with Chestnut Hill scoring the afternoon's first six points.

University of the Sciences took its largest lead of the first half, 37-32, following Simon two 3-pointers in the span of 38 seconds, the second one coming 4:57 ahead of the half.

Gardler's layup put the Devils ahead 40-39 with 2:10 showing, but the Griffins scored the final seven points of the half to take a 46-40 advantage into the locker room.

Chestnut Hill then scored the first five points of the second half to take a game-high 11-point lead, 51-40, less than a minute out of the locker room.

USciences was still down double-digits, 55-45, with 15 and half minutes remaining before Gordon and McCaffrey combined for 11 straight Devils points to get within 59-56 on a McCaffrey 3-pointer with 12:13 showing.

Gordon and Kennedy then combined for five triples in the span of 2:18, before McCaffrey's layup capped 11 unanswered to complete a 31-12 run for the Devils' largest advantage, 73-65, with 9:02 to play.

University of the Sciences would hold on to that lead until Chestnut Hill's layup with 12 seconds left.
