Daly Wins 1500m, Four Relays Place in Top Three at Philly Mets

PHILADELPHIA – Junior Ira Daly won the 1500m and four of SJU's relays placed in the top three of their fields at the unscored 2021 Philadelphia Metropolitan Collegiate Invitational, held at Penn's Franklin Field on Saturday.
 
Daly won the 1500m for the second week in a row, clocking in with a time of 3:58.90 to edge out Haverford's Charlie Ferguson (3:59.82) for the victory in a field of 22.
 
Saint Joseph's Distance Medley Relay finished runner-up to Villanova (9:38.81), totaling a time of 9:44.51 to miss the school record (9:43.65) by just .86 seconds. The first lap went out slower than the Hawks would've hoped and graduate student John Walker crossed the opening 1200m in 3:01.00 before graduate student Justin Moscoe dropped a 46.71 on the 400m. Freshman Gavin Campbell covered the 800m in 1:53.58 before graduate student Zach Michon blazed a 4:02.23 for 1600m to close.
 
Saint Joseph's Sprint Medley Relay of graduate student David Bryant, freshman Eric Ford, sophomore Ladi Bamgbose, and freshman Sean Murphy finished runner-up to TCNJ (3:28.26), posting a time of 3:30.92.
 
SJU's 4x100m relay of senior Vincent Giordano, junior Michael Welde, senior Sebastian Eaton, and Bryant (41.99) and SJU's 4x400m relay of Welde, junior Kyle Magee, Moscoe, and junior Kris Edobi (3:15.63) each finished third.
 
Saint Joseph's 4x800m relay of freshman Jayden Greene, junior Javier Linares, junior George Steinhoff, and junior Michael Szwed crossed in fourth (7:49.83).
 
A pair of Hawks turned in third-place finishes in individual events as sophomore Matthew Coffey crossed the 1500m in 9:43.65 and freshman Patrick Fehm posted a triple jump mark of 46' 7 1/2".
 
In addition to running the second leg of SJU's third-place 4x400m relay, Magee PRed in the 400m hurdles (53.87) for fifth while sophomore Colin Kane led the Hawks in the 5000m (7th, 14:54.32) and freshman Donald Adams led the Hawks in the long jump (9th, 20' 9").
 
With five races under their belts, the Hawks head to the 2021 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships next Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2. The meet will be held at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Va. Stay tuned to SJUHawks.com for a complete meet preview next week.
