Michon Wins Twice, Men's Track and Field Ninth at Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships

FAIRFAX, Va. – Graduate student standout Zach Michon closed his Atlantic 10 career with a bang by winning both of his events to lead the Saint Joseph's men's track and field squad to a ninth-place showing in a field of 12 teams at the 2021 A-10 Outdoor Championships down at George Mason Stadium this weekend. Led by Michon's 20-point effort and a combined 14 points from their three relays, the Hawks recorded 49 points across Saturday and Sunday competition.

Racing the 1500m at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, Michon defeated Davidson's Owen Drometer by 1.42 seconds in 3:48.88 to earn the win in the field of 31.

Just hours later, Michon toed the line of the 5000m at 1:50 p.m. and came out victorious once more, defeating La Salle's Ibrahim Kedir by 3.33 seconds in 15:03.40 for the win in the field of 25. In control for the entire race, Michon took the lead with 200m to go en route to the win.

The victories from the challenging 1500m/5000m double marked Michon's first A-10 titles on the outdoor scene after placing second in the 1500m and third in the 5000m in 2019 and fifth in the 1500m and seventh in the 5000m in 2018.

"It's going to be sad not competing at any more A-10 Championship meets," reflected Michon following the 5000m. "The A-10 meet provides me the ability to work with my teammates to score points for the team, and that makes races mean so much more. I've made many friends among the other A-10 teams, and I will truly miss being able to compete against them. Walking away with two event wins is the cherry on top of this very strange season. I've worked hard this whole year, even in times of doubt, and it's nice to be able to get it done at the end of the day. As Coach Glavin said, everything that the team can accomplish this year is earned, and I'm grateful for the opportunity."

The quartet of junior Michael Welde, junior captain Kyle Magee, senior captain Sebastian Eaton, and junior Michael Szwed placed fourth in the 4x400m relay for five points on Sunday afternoon, and each of the four veterans earned points out of their individual finals to combine for another nine points.

In Sunday afternoon's 400m hurdles finals, Magee turned in his third consecutive sub-54.00 performance (53.58) to place fifth for four points. After turning in his first sub-54.00 performance in the 400m hurdles at the Philadelphia Metropolitan Collegiate Invitational last weekend (53.87), Magee destroyed that time in a collegiate-best 53.41 to turn in the sixth-fastest time in Saturday's preliminaries field of 14.

In Sunday afternoon's 400m finals, Welde placed sixth (48.49 PR) and Eaton finished eighth (49.60) to combine for four points. In Saturday's preliminaries, Welde (48.90) and Eaton (49.06 PR) turned in the seventh- and eighth-fastest times to advance out of the 18-member field. Welde's time marked the then-second-fastest outdoor 400m time of his collegiate career while Eaton's was the fastest open 400m – indoor or outdoor – of his collegiate career.

In Sunday afternoon's 800m finals, Szwed placed eighth (2:01.76) for another SJU point. In Saturday's 800m preliminaries, Szwed turned in the sixth-fastest time (1:53.98) to advance out of the 31-member field; that time marked the second-fastest 800m time – indoor or outdoor – of his collegiate career.

Welde and Eaton scored in a third event for the Crimson and Gray, as senior captain Vincent Giordano, Welde, Eaton, and graduate student David Bryant crossed the 4x100m relay in 41.82 for a fifth-place, four-point performance on Sunday morning while SJU's 4x800m relay of freshman Owen Moelter, junior Javier Linares, freshman Gavin Campbell, and graduate student John Walker crossed in 7:40.64 for a fourth-place, five-point finish on Sunday afternoon.

After being sidelined for multiple weeks due to injury, Matthew Scarpill came through in the 3000m steeplechase on Saturday evening, as the senior captain placed sixth in a field of 10 in 9:29.70 for three points.

The Hawks earned three points out of their freshman jumpers as Patrick Fehm placed seventh in the triple jump (46' 3 1/4") on Sunday afternoon and Donald Adams placed eighth in the long jump (23' 3/4") on Saturday afternoon; Adams' performance marked a lifetime best for the rookie, who surpassed the 23' mark for the first time in his life.

Of note out of the non-scoring performances:
• Sophomore Ira Daly won his 1500m heat in 3:52.69 to tie for the eighth spot (and final scoring position) with Saint Louis' Jackson Higley on Sunday afternoon; the tie was broken down to the 1000th of a second, and Daly missed scoring by just .006 seconds.
• Senior captain Bobby Hastie placed 10th in the 10,000m field of 15 on Saturday evening, crossing in a collegiate-best time of 31:21.67; the performance was an improvement on his previous PR by over 19 seconds.
• Linares crushed his collegiate-best time in the 800m (1:54.36 PR) to turn in the eighth-fastest time in Saturday afternoon's preliminaries despite not advancing.
• Bryant ran a collegiate-best 100m time of 10.97 – his first-ever sub-11.00 performance – to place 10th in Saturday afternoon's preliminaries field of 25.
• Freshman Eric Ford ran a collegiate-best 200m time of 22.16 to place 14th in Saturday afternoon's preliminaries field of 20.
