PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's women's basketball program is excited to welcome back
Joe Logan and
Alexis Santarelli to its staff, head coach
Cindy Griffin announced Thursday. Logan will be taking over as interim director of basketball operations, while Santarelli will be the team's graduate manager.
Logan fills the roll of alum Sarah Fowler who left to join the coaching staff at Robert Morris as an assistant coach. It's her first coaching roll in her career.
"We are excited and fortunate that Joe has joined our staff," Griffin said. "His years of coaching experience and his ability to connect with people along with his organizational and creative skills will be instrumental for our program."
Logan returns to Hawk Hill after serving as an assistant coach under Griffin from 2001-2005, when he left to become the head coach at Loyola (Md.). He held that post for 16 seasons and became the program's all-time winningest coach with 184 wins. Under his tutelage, he guided the Greyhounds to three conference title games. His players received 20 postseason conference accolades, including three major winners since the school joined the Patriot League in 2013-14.
"It is fantastic to be back on Hawk Hill!" Logan said. "Saint Joseph's is a special place with an amazing community of people. I am extremely grateful to
Cindy Griffin for the opportunity to return to such an incredible program. In the short time that I have been back on campus I am reminded of the standard of excellence which the players, staff, and administrators have established and I am excited to be a part of it!"
Off the court, Logan's program was consistently among the nation's best in the classroom. His teams were named to the WBCA Division I Academic Top 25 Honor Roll for five consecutive seasons. The Greyhounds were just one of three schools from 2015-2020 to be nationally ranked in the top 15 academically, reaching as high as No. 5 following the 2017-18 season.
Logan holds the record for most wins in a season (21), most conference wins in a season (15), and is tied for longest winning streak (9). He also led the school to its first ever WNIT appearance and win in 2010-11. He took home the MAAC Coach of the Year in 2006-07.
No stranger to working with coach Griffin, he also served as an assistant coach under her at Loyola for two seasons, before joining her on Hawk Hill.
In his first stint on Hawk Hill, he helped St. Joe's to an overall record of 72-53, while winning two Atlantic 10 Eastern Conference titles and trips to the Atlantic 10 Finals.
Logan also has worked with the NBA and WNBA as an advance scout for the New York Liberty in 1999 and an administrative assistant for the Philadelphia 76ers from 1996-97. He began his coaching career at Centenary College in New Jersey. There, he was as an assistant coach for the Cyclones men's basketball team during the 1996-1997 season.
Logan earned his bachelor's degree in history with a minor in business from Loyola in 1996. As an undergraduate, he worked as a manager for the men's basketball team under the late head coach Skip Prosser and for the women's team under Patty Coyle.
He is married to the former Susan Bryce. The couple have three kids, Maggie, Rose, and Joseph.
Santarelli joins the staff after spending the 2020-21 season as a graduate transfer on the Hawks' roster.
"Alexis is a great addition to our staff as our first graduate manager," Griffin said. "She will be instrumental in all facets of the program, including the ball-handling kids club, community service and marketing. We are excited that Alexis has started her career in sports administration with us!"
Prior to joining SJU, Santarelli played her undergraduate days at Lafayette. Over the course of her career, she appeared in 107 games and made 62 starts. The Philadelphia, Pa. native averaged 7.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.
"St. Joe's has become such a special place to me and I feel so grateful to be given the opportunity to join the staff this year as the graduate manager," Santarelli said. "I am excited to learn about the game in more ways than just playing as a student-athlete and I can't wait to continue my growth here at SJU!"
She graduated from Lafayette in 2020 with her bachelor's degree in psychology and is currently pursuing her MBA at Saint Joseph's.
