Box Score PHILADELPHIA – A late second quarter run proved to be the difference in the No. 12 USciences women's basketball team's 52-45 loss to city-rival Jefferson on Tuesday evening at Bobby Morgan Arena.
The Rams outscored the Devils 17-11 in the period, with the other three played within a point.
The opening 19 and a half minutes were played within two possessions, and Shannon May's jumper with 4:05 left in the half gave the Devils what turned out to be their last lead, 21-20.
That's when the Rams (11-3, 4-1 CACC) made their run, scoring the next nine points before Bria Johnson's late driving layup made the score 29-23 entering the locker room.
University of the Sciences could only manage to tie the score once from there, at 35-35 on Jess Huber's jumper with 2:13 remaining in the third quarter.
Jefferson once again closed the quarter strong though, with a 7-2 spurt re-establishing a five-point lead entering the fourth.
The Rams did not score for the first 6:23 of the final period, but the Devils could not take advantage as Huber scored the only three points in the stretch, with her foul shot making the score 42-40 with 7:50 to play.
The next 4:13 of the contest was scoreless, as University of the Sciences missed six shots that could have either tied the score or given the Devils the lead.
By the time USciences scored again, a Huber layup to cut the deficit to 49-42 with 1:21 left, it proved too little too late.
University of the Sciences shot just 30.3 percent on the night (20-of-66), failing to take advantage of 19 more shot attempts than Jefferson.
The Rams nearly made double the amount of free throws as the Devils attempted, 13-7, and held USciences scoreless from beyond the arc.
Jefferson also had eight more giveaways, 17-9, but the Rams actually outscored the Devils in points off turnovers, 13-7.
Huber led all players with 15 points and a career-high five steals, while also adding four rebounds and three assists.
May was the only other Devil in double-figures, scoring all 12 of her career-high point total in the first half, to go along with six boards and two steals.
Taylor Hamm led all players with 11 rebounds and career-highs of six assists and three blocks, while adding two steals.
Harlem Jennings also had two steals, a new career-best, as USciences had a season-high 13 as a team.
The Devils travel to Dominican for a 1 p.m. tip on Saturday.
