Box Score ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Trailing by as many as 15 late in the first half, the USciences men's basketball tied the score early in second and was within one in the final minutes of a 90-84 loss to No. 14/20 Dominican on Saturday afternoon.
The Devils trailed by nine, 81-72, with 4:19 remaining before Zachary Foley scored six points in an 8-2 spurt that made it a one-possession game for the first time since the 12:07 mark when his three free throws brought the score to 83-80 with 2:09 showing.
Tommy Gardler then followed a Dominican layup with two more foul shots and after a defensive stop, Omari Salvi made it a one-point game, 85-84, with 1:26 to go.
University of the Sciences would not score again though, as the Chargers made a 3-pointer on their next possession before the Devils recorded three missed shots and a turnover in the final 52 seconds.
Salvi was one of two Devil freshmen to record their first career double-doubles on the afternoon, finishing with season-highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Darryl Brown Jr. led USciences with season-bests of 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting and game-highs of 11 rebounds and two blocks.
Gardler also set a new season-best with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting off the bench.
University of the Sciences shot a season-best 52.5 percent (32-of-61), but could not overcome Dominican's 54.7 percent (35-of-64).
The Devils were also undone by 18 turnovers, compared to the Chargers' 10, which led to a 20-10 deficit in points off turnovers.
Jordan Davidson and Foley were also in double-figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively, with Foley leading all players with a season-high six assists.
Dominican (10-2, 3-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC)) took its first double-digit advantage, 30-20, with 5:59 left in the first half, and the Chargers eventually built a game-high 15-point lead, 41-26, 2:38 ahead of the half.
Trailing 43-32 at the break, University of the Sciences was still down 48-37 two minutes into the second before 10 unanswered got the Devils within one, 48-47, with 16:48 to play.
USciences then tied the score at 52 on a Davidson jumper 2:13 later, but the Devils could never take the lead as Dominican built yet another double-digit advantage, 68-58, with 10:27 left.
University of the Sciences would not make it a one-possession game again Foley sparked the late run.
The Devils are back on the road on Tuesday, traveling to city-rival Chestnut Hill for an 8 p.m. tip.
