Box Score ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Dayna Balasa's three-pointer with four seconds remaining in regulation sent the game to overtime, and after both teams missed potential go-ahead baskets in the first extra period, the No. 12 USciences women's basketball team prevailed in the second for an 80-74 triumph at Dominican on Saturday afternoon.
Balasa's triple came out of a timeout, tying the score at 59 on what was the freshman's only basket of the contest after Isla Brennan found her in the right corner.
47 seconds prior she had made it a one-point game with a free throw, before Dominican went ahead by three on a layup with seven seconds remaining.
USciences matched its previous largest lead of the afternoon, 65-61, on an Anna McTamney layup with 3:16 to go in the first overtime, and after five straight Dominican points it was her layup that put the Devils ahead once more, 67-66, with 1:31 left.
University of the Sciences then made 1-of-2 free throws only to have Chargers knot the score at 68 with 58 seconds showing, and both teams would miss potential go-ahead shots in the final seconds.
The entirety of the second overtime stanza was played within a single possession until Kendall Keyes made two free throws to push the score to 77-72 with just 29 seconds to play.
A McTamney and-one with 2:51 on the clock had put USciences ahead for good, 73-70, before Taylor Hamm answered a Dominican jumper with a basket of her own.
Hamm then answered yet another Charger basket with two foul shots at the seven-second mark to seal the comeback victory.
That capped a 17-point, 17-rebound performance for the senior, both of which were career-bests. It was Hamm's third career double-double, and her second in three games. She scored a game-high nine points in overtime, including going 7-of-10 from the line to cap a 9-for-13 performance.
University of the Sciences made as many free throws as Dominican attempted, 19, one of the game's biggest statistical advantages. The Devils' bench also outscored the Chargers' bench 32-8.
McTamney led USciences with 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting off the bench for the second-highest point total of her rookie season. She scored 11 points from the fourth quarter on.
Keyes and Jess Huber were also in double-figures with 15 and 12 respectively, while Brennan scored six of her season-best nine in the fourth quarter. Huber added team-highs of four assists and three steals.
University of the Sciences trailed from the jump, as Dominican scored the first 10 points of the afternoon en route to leads of a game-high 24-8 after the first quarter and then 32-22 at the half.
The Devils got as close as six points seven times, including at 40-46 entering the fourth, before finally pulling within four, 42-46, on McTamney's layup two seconds into the final period.
Huber then made a 3-poitner to make it a one-point game, before Brennan's triple with 8:21 remaining gave USciences its first advantage, 48-47, of the afternoon.
Brennan made three free throws 1:07 later to complete an 18-3 run and give the Devils their largest lead of regulation, 51-47, but Dominican would respond to take its own four-point advantage, 57-53, with 2:09 left in regulation.
McTamney followed that with a layup, before the final 51 seconds played out.
University of the Sciences is back on the road on Tuesday, traveling to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division leader Chestnut Hill for a 6 p.m. tip.
