NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Saint Joseph's senior back Freke van Tilburg was named the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.
Van Tilburg tallied a goal on Friday as the Hawks topped La Salle, 4-0, in their regular season finale. The Hawks held the Explorers to just two shots in the game as they finished off an unbeaten conference slate and the program's sixth outright A-10 regular season title in seven years.
The native of Breda, Netherlands, was previously chosen as the league's Defensive Player of the Week on August 29 and October 10. She has served as a key cog in the SJU defensive corps that shut out all seven conference opponents, a feat that hasn't been achieved in the Atlantic 10 since 1992, and had never been done by a team in the league against a seven-game schedule.
The Hawks are headed to Amherst, Massachusetts, for the Atlantic 10 Championship, which begins Thursday when the top-seeded Hawks take on fourth-seeded VCU.
