COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Saint Joseph's junior goalkeeper
Avianna Wagner has been named the National Field Hockey Coaches Association's National Defensive Player of the Week, the organization announced on Wednesday morning.
Â
A native of Philadelphia, Wagner was named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week after making 15 saves across two games last weekend. On Friday, she made seven stops as the Hawks topped Davidson, 5-1, to move to 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play. Two days later, she collected eight saves, including a stop of a penalty stroke attempt, to keep the Hawks ahead for three and half quarters against third-ranked Duke before ultimately falling, 2-1, in overtime.
Â
Wagner is tied for the Atlantic 10 lead in goals against average in conference play while ranking tied for second in save percentage in league games.
Â
The Hawks return to action on Friday when they host ninth-ranked North Carolina before visiting local rival Penn on Sunday.
