JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Saint Joseph's women's basketball makes its second road trip of the season, set to face North Florida on Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks enter on a five-game win streak to start the year, having won eight of the last nine dating back to last season. Saint Joseph's meets a battle tested UNF team that comes fresh off a trip from Dublin, Ireland in the MAAC-ASUN Dublin Challenge.
Saint Joseph's faces just its second road game of the season on Sunday, coming off a midweek win over Big 5 foe Temple. The Hawks faced the largest deficit of the season at the half, trailing 38-32. SJU outscored the Owls 27-13 in the third quarter en route to an eventual 75-66 win.
Talya Brugler led the scoring for the Hawks with a game-high 17 points on 7-14 shooting. Brugler's 73 points over the first five games are the most since 2017-18 for the Hawks. Mackenzie Smith continued her streak of five double-figure scoring games to start the season, tallying 11 of her 14 points in the second half. Smith went a perfect 4-4 from the field in the fourth quarter to help seal the win. Two-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Laura Ziegler finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, five blocks and three steals.
The Hawks are 12-13 in program history in the state of Florida. The two teams have never faced each other in program history.
Scouting The Ospreys
North Florida started the season with a dominant win over Warner inside UNF Arena, the only home game of the season so far. After a loss at Wisconsin, UNF traveled to Dublin, Ireland to take on Rider and Marist, going 0-2 on its international trip. The meetup with SJU will be the first game in eight days. The Ospreys are scoring 64.5 points per game, conceding nearly 70. UNF are shooting just under 38% from the field early on, finding struggles from the charity stripe with only knocking down 50% of their attempts so far.
Lyric Swann paces the Ospreys with 16.0 points per game, adding 6.0 rebounds per game. Swann also leads the Ospreys with 11 assists and nine steals on the year. Jaelyn Swann also posts double figures with 10.0 per game, while Emma Broermann adds 6.5 points and a team-best 7.0 rebounds.
Taming Temple
For the third straight season, the Hawks walked off the court against their Big 5 foe Temple with a victory. The Hawks moved to 2-0 in the Big 5, using a 27-13 outburst in the third quarter to overcome a six-point deficit at the half. The Hawks used season bests in shooting percentage, assists, steals, blocks, points in the paint and points off turnovers to rally against the Broad Street rivals.
Season Debut
Junior
Emma Boslet made her season debut against Temple after being sidelined the opening four games for a minor lower body injury. The native of Edison, N.J. made the most of her nine minutes of action, grabbing an early offensive rebound and put back in the first minute on the court. Boslet finished with six points and a steal, shooting 3-4 from the field.
Leading By Example
Katie Jekot returns for her sixth year of collegiate basketball, providing veteran leadership for the Hawks. The Enola, Pa. native has played in 106 career games on Hawk Hill, including 100 starts. The sixth year guard holds a 1.48 assist-to-turnover ratio over her career, her 981 points just 19 from hitting the 1,000 mark. Jekot also sits just 27 assists away from cracking the top 10 in program history.
