Women's Basketball Dominates Fourth Quarter to Overcome Holy Family for Ninth Straight Win

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – The USciences women's basketball team held city-rival Holy Family scoreless for the first 7:54 of the fourth quarter, overcoming a six-point final period deficit for a 61-51 win, the Devils' ninth straight, over the Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Bobby Morgan Arena.

Trailing 44-38 entering the fourth, University of the Sciences (19-3, 14-2 CACC) scored the first 14 points, taking its first lead of the afternoon, 45-44, on Kendall Keyes' jumper with 6:31 remaining.

Her 3-pointer 2:30 earlier had made it a one-point game, and she added five free throws in the final 1:45 to cap a 10-point fourth quarter and game-high 14-point performance.

Isla Brennan followed Keyes' go-ahead jumper with a layup and after two Jess Huber foul shots, a Taylor Hamm and-one put an exclamation point on the 14 unanswered with 2:40 left.

A Holy Family 3-pointer 34 seconds later made it a five-point game, but the Tigers could get no closer as USciences iced the contest by making 9-of-10 free throws over the final 1:45, capping a 23-7 fourth quarter.

That also capped a 29-of-32 (90.6 percent) performance at the line, including going 14-of-15 in the fourth quarter, for the Devils' most made foul shots since making 29 versus Georgian Court on Dec. 21, 2013.

Huber (7-of-7), Brennan (4-of-4), Kerry Patterson (4-of-4), Hamm (3-of-3), Shannon May (2-of-2) and Anna McTamney (2-of-2) were all perfect from the line.

Keyes, the only Devil in double-figures, finished 7-for-8.

Huber fell one point shy of her second career double-double, tying her career-best with a team-high 10 rebounds.

Brenann scored nine too, while Hamm added seven points and seven boards.

McTamney (seven points) and Patterson (six) joined Brennan in helping the USciences bench outscore Holy Family's 25-11.

The Devils also outscored the Tigers 22-6 in points off turnovers, thanks in large part to May's career and game-high five steals.

Neither team led by more than a possession in a first quarter that ended with Holy Family leading 14-12.

HFU then opened the second quarter with the first six points and even though USciences got as close as three midway through the period, eighth unanswered put the Tigers on top by a game-high 11, 32-21, just 51 seconds ahead of the break.

Back-to-back baskets by the Devils got them within seven, before Holy Family closed out the first half scoring with a free throw for a 33-25 advantage.

A foul shot to open the third quarter scoring gave the Tigers a second-half-high nine-point lead, 34-25, and USciences could only manage to get as close as four on four occasions, including when two Huber free throws made the score 42-38 with 10 seconds left in the period.

Holy Family would beat the buzzer though, establishing the 44-38 advantage entering the fourth.

University of the Sciences plays its final road game of the regular season at regionally-ranked Jefferson this Wednesday at 8 p.m.
