Box Score PHILADELPHIA – With the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Southern Division title on the line, the USciences women's basketball team was denied a fifth consecutive crown as Chestnut Hill drained a 3-pointer with just five seconds left in a 63-60 win over the Devils at Bobby Morgan Arena on Saturday afternoon.
University of the Sciences (20-4, 15-3 CACC) had an opportunity to send the game to overtime, but a 3-pointer of its own missed at the buzzer.
The result means the Devils will host Dominican, the three seed from the CACC North, in a CACC Tournament Quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
The contest will be the last-ever University of the Sciences basketball game at Bobby Morgan Arena. .
Prior the game the Devils honored its senior class of Juliana Gura, Taylor Hamm, Jess Huber, Kendall Keyes and Shannon May.
May made back-to-back baskets to tie the score at 60-60 with 1:36 remaining before the teams went scoreless until the game-winning triple.
University of the Sciences had fought back from a game-high nine-point deficit with just under eight minutes to play, thanks in large part to Anna McTamney.
The freshman scored six consecutive points, before Keyes' jumper completed a 10-0 run to make the score 51-50 with 4:36 to go.
Chestnut Hill (23-5, 16-2) responded with a 10-5 spurt spurt to regain a four-point advantage, 60-56, less than two minutes later before May's back-to-back baskets.
McTamney scored nine of her team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter without missing, making 3-of-3 field goals, 2-of-2 triples and her one free throw attempt.
Huber was second on the Devils with 14 points to become the 21st student-athlete in program history to surpass 1,000 career points.
Keyes and May both added eight points each, with May also tying Hamm for the team-lead with six rebounds and four assists.
University of the Sciences outshot Chestnut Hill overall, but the Griffins made 13-of-17 free throws compared to the Devils' 3-of-3. CHC also won the battle in the paint (26-12) and in fast-break (12-2), as well as second-chance points (10-3).
The entire first half was played within five points, with USciences holding its two game-high five-point advantages, including at 9-4 after Isla Brennan found Gura for a layup 4:25 into play.
Chestnut Hill would close the first quarter with a basket to make the score 16-14, and the Griffins led by as many as four, 26-22, following a 3-pointer with 6:36 left in the second.
The two teams would then trade four lead changes in the final 3:43, with a CHC 3-point putting the Griffins ahead 31-30 entering the locker room.
The lone two-possession advantage in the third quarter, 42-38, came on CHC layup with 2:20 showing, but a McTamney 3-pointer helped cut the deficit to three, entering the fourth.
The Griffins would opened the final period with the first six points to take the afternoon's largest lead, 50-41, with 8:04 remaining.
