Box Score CALDWELL, N.J. – It was a fairytale ending for the University of the Sciences women's basketball team in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).
In their final season, the Devils won their third CACC title in five years, and fifth overall, by defeating rival Jefferson 53-44 on Sunday afternoon at Caldwell.
The 2022 team joins USciences' previous CACC champions from 2004, 2006, 2017 and 2018 in etching their legacy the league's annals.
The story was the Devils' defense, as they held a third consecutive CACC Tournament opponent to 47 points or less.
Jefferson (23-8) shot just 30.6 percent (15-of-49), and USciences won the points off turnovers battle 15-4.
The Devils also dominated the boards, 40-25, helping lead to a 17-5 edge in second-chance points.
Named the Tournament MVP and an All-Tournament honoree, respectively, Jess Huber and Isla Brennan tied for a game-high with 12 points.
Shannon May, USciences' other All-Tournament honoree, anchored the defense with a game-high two steals and fell one rebound shy of a career-best with nine.
Taylor Hamm led all players with 13 boards, while Kendall Keyes was also in double-figures with 11 points.
Huber notably moved into a tie for sixth in the program's single-season history with 65 3-pointers on the year.
University of the Sciences held three seven-point advantages in the first half, including when Brennan made two free throws to put the Devils ahead 18-11 with 8:11 left in the second quarter.
Jefferson responded with an 11-2 run for its first lead since the opening minute when a three-point play made the score 22-20 4:45 ahead of the break.
USciences scored the final seven points of the first half though, five of which were by provided by Huber, whose 3-pointer with 33 seconds showing put the Devils ahead 27-22 entering the locker room.
Jefferson scored the first two points of the third quarter to momentarily trim the deficit to three, but USciences took control with 10 unanswered for a game-high 13-point lead, 37-24, after back-to-back 3-pointers by Keyes and Huber, the second one coming with 4:44 left in the period.
The Devils maintained a two-possession advantage until two free throws brought the Rams within five, 45-40, with 3:33 remaining, but that was as close as they could get as they managed to score just four more points.
Hamm made a free throw on the next trip down the floor, and layups by Brennan and Huber 27 seconds apart, the second one coming with just 2:06 to play, re-built eight-point leads.
