Opening Tip
The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team returns from a three-game road trip to face the Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors on Tuesday, November 25. Tipoff from Hagan Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Hello, My Name Is...Again!
For the second game in a row, the Hawks face a first-time opponent, taking on Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday. It is one of four first-time opponents for SJU this season. In addition to its most recent game at UNLV, the Hawks have their initial men's basketball clashes against Coastal Carolina (Dec. 22) and Arcadia (Dec. 28)
This Side of The Bridge
Despite the trip being less than 10 miles, it has been a long time since St. Joe's faced an opponent from just across the Ben Franklin Bridge. The last time SJU played a team from Camden was the fifth game of the 1916-17 season, a 29-23 win against Camden High School. It's just schools in South Jersey that are the rarity as the Hawks have played a school from the Garden State in each of the last four seasons, most recently taking on Princeton last year. Tuesday is the first of two games in a row against Jersey schools with Saint Joseph's battling Princeton on Sunday, November 30.
Lots Of Time At The Line
St. Joe's and UNLV spent a lot of time at the free throw line on Thursday as the teams combined to take 83 free throws in the contest. It is the second most combined FTA in a regulation game this season between Division I schools, trailing only 86 attempts between Hawaii and East Texas A&M on November 9. The 49 shots at the line attempted by UNLV are the fourth most against a Division I opponent this season and are the most that the Hawks have allowed in a game since at least the 2004-05 season. Saint Joseph's took 34 attempts of its own at the charity stripe. It is the second time this year the team has been to the free throw line at least 30 times.
Tis The Season For Giving
The Hawks had an incredible game passing the ball on Thursday, coming away with 25 assists on 26 made field goals. The 96.2 percent assist rate is the highest in NCAA Division I this season, topping the 96.0 percent (24-of-25) by Niagara against Delaware State on November 10. Four SJU players had four or more dimes, led by eight from
Deuce Jones II. The eight assists were a career-high for Jones while
Austin Williford (5) and
Justice Ajogbor (4) tied personal bests.
Home Sweet Hagan
Returning to Hawk Hill may be just the remedy SJU needs as the Hawks are 149-86, a winning percentage of .634 in Michael J. Hagan '85 Arena. The games have been particularly good since the beginning of the 2023-24 season with the Hawks going 29-8 (.784). The 27 victories from 2023-25 are the most in a two-year stretch since the building was renovated and renamed Hagan Arena in 2009.
Jones-ing For More
Shaking off a rough season opener,
Deuce Jones II has looked like the player that won the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year award last season in his most recent four contests. The sophomore from Trenton, N.J. is averaging 22.8 points per game since November 8, while shooting 45.4 percent from the floor. He started the stretch with a career-high 29 points against Drexel and has at least 23 points in three of the four contests.
20-20-20 Vision
Despite the final result at UNLV, St. Joe's had an offensive showing it hadn't reached since the 2020-21 season.
Deuce Jones II (23),
Jaiden Glover-Toscano (20) and
Derek Simpson (20) each topped the 20-point mark in the contest. The last time the Hawks had three players score 20+ in a game was January 18, 2021 when Ryan Daly (30), Jordan Hall (22) and Taylor Funk (20) accomplished the feat at La Salle.
Hero, Not A Zero
Jersey number notwithstanding,
Derek Simpson has been anything but a zero for Saint Joseph's in the early part of the 2025-26 season. The senior from Mount Laurel, N.J. is averaging career-highs with 12.6 points and 6.0 rebound per game. Simpson is also connecting on 48.1 percent of his shots from the floor and is 7-for-20 from three-point range. In his last two games, he has tallied 18.0 points a contest and shot 14-for-25 (56.0 percent) from the field.
Scouting Report
- Rutgers-Camden enters play 5-1 overall and is coming off an 84-73 win against Immaculata on Saturday. The Scarlet Raptors are 5-1 for a second consecutive season and were selected as the dark horse in the New Jersey Athletic Conference preseason poll.
- Leading the offense for RUC is Cameron Downs, who is averaging 23.2 points per game. His 139 total points scored are seventh in NCAA Division III. Also in double figures is Ryan Senft, tallying 12.3 per night. Senft is a multi-purpose player, leading the team in rebounds at 7.5 a contest. He is also tied for the Rutgers-Camden lead in assists with 22, matching the total of Keion Elliott.
- It is the defense that leads the way for the Scarlet Raptors in the early going as they rank in the top-50 nationally in points allowed at 66.0 per game. They have put relentless pressure on opposing ball-handlers, posting 9.8 steals per night.
- Rebounding is an area of concern for Rutgers-Camden as they are in the bottom-100 nationally in rebounds per contest at 34.67. RUC often goes one-and-done as they are 358th out of 405 teams in offensive rebounds per outing at 8.17.
- Stuart Pradia, now in his seventh season, has led an impressive turnaround for the Scarlet Raptors, taking the team from a combined 1-30 from 2020-22 to a 13-12 record in 2023-24.
All-Time Series
Thursday is the first-ever meeting between Saint Joseph's and Rutgers-Camden.
Century Mark Ahead
Justice Ajogbor has seven blocks this season as he climbs closer to 100 in his time at St. Joe's. The graduate student currently has 95 swats at SJU in 40 games. Ajogbor had 14 games last season with three or more blocks, including a career-high of eight against UAB in the NIT. He also had a streak of 11 consecutive games with multiple blocks from December 21, 2024, through February 1, 2025, the longest such stretch in NCAA Division I. His 86 blocks in 2024-25 ranked fifth nationally.
Towering Over The Competition
With
Justice Ajogbor (6'10"),
Jaden Smith (6'11") and
Steven Solano (7'0"), the Hawks' roster is loaded with height. Only eight opponents for St. Joe's have three or more players who are 6'10" or taller, led by five on Duquesne's roster. Three teams – Princeton, Coppin State and Rutgers-Camden – do not have a player on their squad that is taller than 6'9".
Next Up
