Opening Tip
The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team opens the final month of the season with a road tilt at Fordham on Saturday, March 1. Tipoff from Rose Hill Gym is scheduled for noon with the game to air on USA Network.
On The Precipice
Erik Reynolds II will need to wait at least one more game to claim the Saint Joseph's career scoring record after posting eight against St. Bonaventure on Wednesday. Reynolds enters the game against the Rams with 2,075 points. He needs 20 points to pass former National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson (2000-04) to become the career scoring leader at SJU. Nelson netted 2,094 points in his Saint Joseph's career. The Temple Hills, Md. product also has 334 three-pointers in his career, leaving him 10 shy of breaking Langston Galloway's (2011-14) program record.
It Had Been A While
The Hawks finally broke through against St. Bonaventure with their Wednesday win after suffering 10 consecutive losses to their Western New York rivals. It was the first victory for SJU against the Bonnies since January 6, 2018. The win was also the 52nd all-time for St. Joe's against St. Bonaventure, the fifth most against any opponent in program history.
NET Gains
With the win against the Bonnies, Saint Joseph's moved into the top-80 of the NET ratings for the first time this season, coming in at No. 79. The move now means the Atlantic 10 has four teams inside the NET 80 and five teams in the top-100.
Trees Making Threes
In a category normally dominated by guards, both
Rasheer Fleming and
Anthony Finkley have been among the best in the A-10 from beyond the arc this season, an impressive feat given their height. Finkley (6'7") and Fleming (6'9") come in fourth and fifth in the A-10 in three-point percentage at 43.2 and 42.6 percent, respectively. The pair are among just 43 players nationally who are 6'7" or taller and average at least one trey made per game while shooting better than 40 percent from beyond the arc. SJU is one of two teams along with Stonehill to have two players on that list.
The Big Three
One look at their scoring averages makes it clear how important
Erik Reynolds II,
Rasheer Fleming and
Xzayvier Brown are to the St. Joe's offense, but a bit of a deeper look reveals just how special the trio has been. Each of them has scored in double figures at least 44 times in their careers, making SJU the only school in the A-10 with three players who have at least 40 such games. At 104 games with 10+ points, Reynolds is one of two players in the conference to reach the feat 100 or more times. Brown has been exceptional at the stat, scoring 10 or more in all 25 games in which he has played this season.
Brown On The Boards
At 6'2",
Xzayvier Brown isn't the most physically imposing player on the court, but don't think that doesn't mean he can't take the ball off the glass. He is one of just 15 players nationally standing 6'2" or less to average at least five rebounds a game, pulling in 5.1 a night. Those rebounding totals plus his ability to score have helped Brown into some elite company. There have been 223 double-doubles this season by players 6'2" or under. Brown is one of 14 players to match that criteria and have at least four double-doubles on the year.
The Oldest Of Them All
After playing in the second oldest continuous use arena in college basketball twice this season with games against Penn and Virginia Tech at the Palestra, Saint Joseph's make the journey to The Bronx to play at the oldest college basketball arena in the nation, Rose Hill Gym. The venue is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2025, opening to the public on January 16, 1925. SJU is 17-8 all-time at Rose Hill Gym, playing its first game there in February 10, 1926. Amazingly, the series between the Hawks and Rams predates Rose Hill Gym as Saint Joseph's played road games at Fordham in the 1914-15 season and on February 16, 1922.
Scouting Report
Fordham enters play 11-17 overall and is 3-12 in the A-10 following a 74-64 setback at George Mason in Tuesday. The Rams were picked 14th in the conference preseason poll.
Leading the offense for Fordham is Jackie Johnson III who is second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 18.6 a night. Japhet Medor and Joshua Rivera are also netting double figures at 13.5 and 10.9 a game, respectively. Romad Dean tops the team at 5.8 rebounds an outing. Medor has 116 assists.
One area where the Rams perform well is taking the ball off their opponents, ranking third in the A-10 at 7.8 steals a contest. They also get to the offensive glass as their 11.86 per game currently has them fourth int he conference.
Despite their overall record, Fordham has also protected their home floor with an 8-6 record at Rose Hill Gym.
An area of concern for the Rams is holding on tot he ball as they are last in the Atlantic 10 and in the bottom-50 in NCAA Division I at 13.5 turnovers an night. They are also at the bottom of the league, allowing teams to shoot 46.6 percent from the floor.
Keith Urgo is in his third season as the head coach at Fordham and his fourth year overall on staff. He made an immediate splash, going 25-8 and advancing to the A-10 semifinals in his first season.
All-Time Series
Saturday is the 61st all-time meeting between the Hawks and Rams. SJU holds a 41-19 advantage in the series and is 37-6 against Fordham since the Rams joined the A-10 for the 1995-96 season Saint Joseph's is 17-10 all-time in The Bronx.
Last Time Against Fordham
A balanced scoring attack saw the Hawks topple the Rams 82-69 at Hagan Arena on March 2, 2024.
Kacper Klaczek topped the SJU with 16 points. He also led the team in rebounds and assists with six each.
Cameron Brown scored 15 with
Erik Reynolds II posting 14. Xayvier Brown added 10. St. Joe's scored the first 10 points of the game and was up 41-15 with 4:17 to play in the first half. Fordham got the lead down to 16 at half and cut it to eight in less than seven minutes in the second half, but the Hawks pushed back up to 62-48 midway through the frame and maintained through the end of the contest.
