Opening Tip
Saint Joseph's continues to alternate home and road games, coming back home to face St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, January 14. Tipoff from Hagan Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with the game to air on ESPN+.

A Clean Sweep
Saint Joseph's had some standout performances in the past week and were recognized by the conference as Derek Simpson was named A-10 Player of the Week and Austin Williford was selected as A-10 Rookie of the Week. Simpson recorded the first two double-doubles of his career on his way to averaging 21.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game. He tied a career-high with 23 points and dished 11 assists in the overtime win against Duquesne on Wednesday. Following that, he netted 19 and pulled in a personal best 11 rebounds at Richmond on Sunday. Williford averaged 14.0 points and shot better than 57 percent from the floor in the two games. He had a career high 16 points versus Duquesne, including three triples and the layup that beat the shot clock and put the Hawks on top to stay in overtime. Sunday was a homecoming of sorts for the Charlottesville native and he did not disappoint the friends and family in attendance with 12 points.

What A Difference A Week Makes
After the January 3 game against Davidson, things did not look for SJU in conference play as the Hawks were languishing in a tie for the bottom spot at 0-2. This past week brought renewed energy as the Hawks went 2-0, including their first road win of the season. The pair of games vaulted St. Joe's into a tie for fifth place in the A-10 at the quarter-mark of the year.

Triple Double-Double
While last year may have been an anomaly with Saint Joseph's recording 13 double-doubles, coming into Atlantic 10 play, the Hawks had just one on the season. That one belonged to Justice Ajogbor who delivered 10 points and 11 rebounds in the Big 5 Classic against Temple on December 6. The last two games, however, have seen a surge in double-doubles with three of them as Derek Simpson has two and Dasear Haskins has one. For each player, they are the first such games of their careers. Simpson has posted two double-doubles in a row and is the first St. Joe's player to have them in back-to-back contests since Rasheer Fleming on January 3 and 8, 2025.

Unconventional Success
SJU took just six free throws against Richmond, its second lowest total of the season overall. It is just the third time in the last 20 seasons that the Hawks won a game while attempting six or fewer shots at the line, along with their games against American (6) on December 6, 2023 and Loyola Chicago (2) on December 22, 2018. Saint Joseph's has also won two NCAA Tournament games with less than six shots at the line, beating Texas Tech in 2004 with five shots and upsetting No. 1 DePaul in 1981 with just four tries at the line. Coming into Sunday's game, St. Joe's was averaging 21.6 free throw attempts per game.

Welcome To The Club
When he hit his second three-pointer of the game on Sunday, Derek Simpson became a member of the 1,000-point club. The points are a cumulative total between his time at Saint Joseph's and at Rutgers. He is one of 268 active Division I players out of more than 5,600 to reach the mark. It is almost equal numbers at each institution as he scored 507 with the Scarlet Knights and has 506 and counting with the Hawks.

Valuing the Rock
In the last handful of games, SJU has done a much better job of not giving the ball away to its opponents. In conference games, the Hawks have turned the ball over just 9.8 times per game, a mark that would lead the A-10. Included in the stretch was a season-low six turnovers at Saint Louis on December 31. This improvement follows a nine-game stretch where St. Joe's coughed up the rock 13.9 times a contest.

Scouting Report
  • St. Bonaventure enters play 11-5 overall and is 0-3 in the A-10 following an 81-77 setback against Fordham on Saturday. The Bonnies are looking for their first win since December 20 when they beat Le Moyne.
  • Leading the offense for SBU is Frank Mitchell at 16.4 points per game. He is closely followed by Darryl Simmons II with 15.8 an outing. Cayden Charles adds a third scoring option, netting 12.5 points a night. Mitchell is averaging a double-double and leads the Atlantic 10 in rebounding at 10.8 boards per contest. Dasante Bowen has 65 assists.
  • The Bonnies have areas they perform well in on both sides of the ball. Offensively, they are 32nd nationally in three-point percentage at 37.3 percent. They also hit their free throws, ranking 50th at a 76.1 percent clip. SBU protects the rim well, sitting at 40th in NCAA D1 and second in the A-10 (trailing Saint Joseph's) at 4.8 blocks per game.
  • While St. Bonaventure may make a high percentage of threes, it doesn't take too many as it is 12th in the conference at 19.8 attempts per game. It has also given up its share of second-chance opportunities, ranking 292nd overall at 23.19 defensive rebounds a night.
  • Mark Schmidt is in his 19th season as the head coach of the Bonnies with a record of 335-243 in Olean. He has guided his teams to seven 20-win seasons and three NCAA tournament appearances.

All-Time Series
Sunday is the 86th meeting between the Hawks and Bonnies with St. Joe's holding a 51-34 series advantage. The 85 games the two teams have already played and the 51 wins against SBU are the fifth most for any St. Joe's opponent SJU snapped a 10-game skid against St. Bonaventure with its win last season.

Last Time Against St. Bonaventure
Saint Joseph's broke open a close game in the second half and claimed a 75-64 win against St. Bonaventure on February 26, 2025. It was the first win for the Hawks against the Bonnies since January 6, 2018. Rasheer Fleming scored 19 and had three blocks. Derek Simpson added 11 points off the bench. Erik Reynolds II led SJU with six assists. St. Joe's used a late run in the first half, outscoring SBU 15-7 in the final six minutes of the frame to forge a 35-35 tie at halftime. In the second half, Saint Joseph's shot 51.8 percent overall and had a 10-2 run early in the frame to put some distance between the two teams.

Special Delivery
With his 11 assists against Duquesne, Derek Simpson moved into some select territory for the Hawks. He became the 13th player since 2004-05 to record double figures in assists for a game. In total, the feat has been accomplished 20 times in the last two decades with Jordan Hall (2020-22) leading the way with 10 or more dimes five times.

Towering Over The Competition
With Justice Ajogbor (6'10"), Jaden Smith (6'11") and Steven Solano (7'0"), the Hawks' roster is loaded with height. Only eight of St. Joe's opponents have three or more players who are 6'10" or taller, led by five on Duquesne's roster. Two teams – Princeton and Rutgers-Camden – do not have a player on their squad that is taller than 6'9".

Next Up
St. Joe's travels to Central Virginia for the second time in eight days as it heads back to Richmond to face VCU on Monday, January 19. Tipoff from the Siegel Center is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. with the game airing on CBS Sports Network.
