Opening Tip
Saint Joseph's plays its first home game of the 2026 calendar year, facing the Davidson Wildcats on Saturday, January 3. Tipoff from Hagan Arena is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. with the game airing on CBS Sports Network.
Fits Like A Glove
After missing the two games before the Christmas holiday with an injury,
Jaiden Glover-Toscano picked up right where he left off when he took the floor against Arcadia and then continued the trend at Saint Louis. The sophomore from Brooklyn scored a career-high 29 points, connecting on 6-of-12 shots from beyond the arc. He followed that with 23 points, going 4-for-5 from three-point range against the Billikens. December saw a significant uptick in the numbers for Glover-Toscano. He was 21-for-42 from beyond the arc in his last five games and scored 20.3 points per contest. In November, he connected on just 31.0 percent (13-of-42) three-point attempts and tallied 12.3 per night.
Rising To Meet The Moment
With injuries taking their toll on the Hawks in the past couple of games, St. Joe's has needed players to step up and
Khaafiq Myers has answered the call. In the last three games, the redshirt freshman is averaging 12.3 points and 2.5 assists per game. Through his first 10 games of the season, he was tallying 2.1 points and 1.7 dimes per contest. One thing that has remained for Myers throughout the year has been his steady ball-handling with 27 assists and just 11 turnovers, a 2.45:1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Valuing the Rock
In the last handful of games, SJU has done a much better job of not giving the ball away to its opponents. In the last three games, the Hawks have turned the ball over just 9.7 times per game, a mark that would lead the A-10. Included in the stretch was a season-low six turnovers at Saint Louis on Wednesday. This improvement follows a nine-game stretch where St Joe's coughed up the rock 13.9 times a contest.
Under The Radar
Much of the talk around the Hawks this season has been the superlative performances of some of the members of the team. Perhaps not being discussed enough has been the consistent play of
Dasear Haskins. The redshirt sophomore is averaging 10.0 points and 5.9 rebounds per game this season. He already has eight games in double figures, one more than last season when he was on the A-10 All-Rookie Team. In the last five games, he has stepped up the performance even more, averaging 11.7 points and 7.5 boards per contest. During the stretch, he is shooting 53.1 percent from the field (26-for-49) and is 8-for-21 from three-point range after opening the season 5-for-21 from distance.
Team Effort
St. Joe's enters Saturday 35th in rebounds per game nationally and is third in the Atlantic 10 at 41.0 boards per night. What is notable about that mark is the Hawks do not have a single player pulling in more than 5.9 boards a contest.
Dasear Haskins leads the team with that 5.9 per game mark while
Derek Simpson (5.6),
Jaiden Glover-Toscano (4.7),
Austin Williford (4.3) and
Justice Ajogbor (4.2) give SJU five players with four or more rebounds per game. Size hasn't mattered as only Ajogbor stands taller than 6'8" and four of the five are listed as guards on the roster. The +5.4 rebounding margin would be the highest for Saint Joseph's since the 1991-92 team was 6.7 boards per game better than its opponents. That team included Carlin Warley and Bernard Blunt, who are both in the top-20 in program history in rebounds with 1,138 and 734, respectively.
Scouting Report
- Davidson enters play 8-5 overall and is 0-1 in the A-10 following an 89-83 double overtime loss against Duquesne on Tuesday. The Wildcats were picked 11th in the A-10 preseason poll.
- Leading the offense for Davidson is Roberts Blums at 10.5 points per night. His leading the team in scoring is quite impressive as he has appeared off the bench in all 13 games so far and is averaging just 19.2 minutes a contest. Balance is the theme for the Wildcats in scoring as they have six players all averaging 8.4 points per game or more. Ian Platteeuw tops the team in rebounding at 4.6 boards per night. Penn transfer Sam Brown has 32 assists.
- Because of its balanced scoring, Davidson enters the game 10th nationally in bench points at 37.85 per game. It has also done an excellent job of holding on to the ball, leading the A-10 and ranking in the top-65 in NCAA D1 at 10.5 turnovers per game. DC also makes its threes, connecting at 36.9 percent from distance, 57th in the country.
- Part of the reason that bench scoring is so high for the Wildcats has been an inconsistent starting lineup. They have had nine different players start a game this season with only Brown and Josh Scovens in the tipoff lineup for all 13 contests. Rebounding has also been difficult as they rank last in the A-10 and 296th nationally at 33.62 caroms an outing.
- Matt McKillop is in his fourth season as the head coach at Davidson with a record of 56-54. The 2006 alumnus is in his 18th season overall on the bench for the Wildcats and has been on the bench for five NCAA tournament appearances with the team, most recently in 2018.
All-Time Series
Saturday is the 28th meeting between the Hawks and Wildcats with Davidson holding a 15-12 series advantage. SJU has made strides in the last couple of years, winning back-to-back games against DC. The series dates to the 1956-57 season when St. Joe's traveled to Charlotte, N.C. for the Carousel Classic. The teams also met in the 1966 NCAA Tournament where Saint Joseph's downed Davidson 92-76 in the East Region Third Place Game.
Last Time Against Davidson
In a historic victory for the Hawks, Saint Joseph's downed Davidson 78-61 at Belk Arena on January 21, 2025.
Erik Reynolds II scored 17 for SJU.
Rasheer Fleming had 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
Justice Ajogbor netted 10, also pulling in eight boards and rejecting three shots. It was the first win for SJU at Davidson since an 85-84 victory on January 16, 1971 at Johnston Hall and was the initial win for SJU at Belk Arena in nine tries. The Hawks led wire-to-wire, opening a 19-6 lead 6:31 into the game, eventually going up 43-27 at halftime. The Wildcats looked to make a game of it early in the second half, cutting the lead to eight in just four minutes, but St. Joe's regained control, going on a 9-0 run and didn't lead by fewer than 12 the rest of the way.
Towering Over The Competition
With
Justice Ajogbor (6'10"),
Jaden Smith (6'11") and
Steven Solano (7'0"), the Hawks' roster is loaded with height. Only eight of St. Joe's opponents have three or more players who are 6'10" or taller, led by five on Duquesne's roster. Two teams – Princeton and Rutgers-Camden – do not have a player on their squad that is taller than 6'9".
Next Up
The Hawks remain at home, hosting Duquesne on Wednesday, January 7. Tipoff from Hagan Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with the game to air on ESPN+.
