Opening Tip
Saint Joseph's plays its first of two games in eight days in Virginia's capital, taking on the Richmond Spiders on Sunday, January 11. Tipoff from the Robins Center is scheduled for noon with the game to air on USA.

Working Overtime
Fans who were at Wednesday night's game were treated to an instant classic as Saint Joseph's downed Duquesne 97-70 in overtime. It was the first overtime game for St. Joe's since the quarterfinals of last season's A-10 tournament, a 73-68 win for SJU against Dayton. It is the second consecutive year that the Hawks and Dukes played an overtime game. Duquesne took an 85-81 victory on January 8, 2025. The game was the first OT contest at Hagan Arena since February 16, 2022 against George Mason and the first extra session win at home for St. Joe's since a 91-82 victory against La Salle on February 20, 2021.

Double-Double Trouble
With each establishing at least one career-high against the Dukes, both Derek Simpson and Dasear Haskins posted their first career double-doubles. Simpson tied a personal best with 23 points and had 11 assists, marking a new individual standard. Haskins netted 13 with a career-high 10 rebounds. It is the first time since last year's game at Duquesne on January 8 that SJU had two players with a double-doubles in the same game and a double-double in points and assists.

Special Delivery
With his 11 assists against the Dukes, Simpson moved into some select territory for the Hawks. He became the 13th player since 2004-05 to record double figures in assists for a game. In total, the feat has been accomplished 20 times in the last two decades with Jordan Hall (2020-22) leading the way with 10 or more dimes five times.

One Milestone Accomplished...
With his first block of the game against Duquesne, coming with 2:55 to go in the first half, Justice Ajogbor moved into the Saint Joseph's career top-10 in rejections. He ended the night with two blocks, giving him 117 in his SJU career. Next on the list is former teammate Rasheer Fleming who turned aside 139 shots in his time on Hawk Hill.

...One To Go
Thanks to a 23-point effort against Duquesne, Derek Simpson finds himself less than 10 points from a career milestone. Combined between his play at Saint Joseph's at Rutgers, Simpson enters the game at Richmond with 994 career points. He scored 507 points in 66 games with the Scarlet Knights from 2022-24 and thus far has 487 with the Hawks.

Fantastic Freshmen
St. Joe's got a big lift from their youngest players as Austin Williford and Khaafiq Myers played key roles in the win against DU. Williford scored a career-high 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting overall, also gong 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. The game was a resurgence for the Charlottesville, Va. native who had scored 13 points in the four games since his breakout performance against Delaware State. Myers netted nine points, his sixth consecutive game with nine or more. During the span, the Neumann-Goretti product is averaging 11.2 points per game and was named the Big 5 Rookie of the Week on Monday.

One Is Enough
It's been rare that Jaiden Glover-Toscano has had an off night for the Hawks, but when he does, it stops at one game. The sophomore has recorded three games this season in single-digit scoring. In next the contests that follow those games, he is averaging 16.3 points per game and is shooting 10-for-22 (45.5 percent) from beyond the arc.

Valuing the Rock
In the last handful of games, SJU has done a much better job of not giving the ball away to its opponents. During the last four games, the Hawks have turned the ball over just 10.2 times per game, a mark that would lead the A-10. Included in the stretch was a season-low six turnovers at Saint Louis on December 31. This improvement follows a nine-game stretch where St. Joe's coughed up the rock 13.9 times a contest.

Scouting Report
  • Richmond enters play 12-4 overall and is 2-1 in the Atlantic 10, following an 89-80 win at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday. The Spiders have outpaced expectations so far after being picked 10th in the A-10 preseason poll. They have already won more games that last year.
  • It is a balanced offensive attack for Richmond with four players averaging between 10 and 13 points per game. Leading the way is AJ Lopez at 12.8 per night, followed by Jaden Daughtry at 11.4. Will Johnston and Aiden Argabright are netting 10.5 and 10.2 points an outing respectively. Mike Walz tops the team at 6.6 rebounds a night. Johnston and Walz tie for the team lead with 40 assists.
  • The Spiders can hit from downtown, ranking second in the Atlantic 10 and 28th nationally at 37.8 percent from beyond the arc. They also get to the line and make their free throws, scoring 18.4 points per game at the charity stripe while connecting on 75.6 percent of their attempts. Both totals rank in the 80th percentile or above, nationally.
  • While UR gets to the line, it also puts its opponents there, ranking 12th in the conference and 251st in NCAA D1 with 18.5 fouls per game, resulting in teams taking an average of 20.3 free throws per game. Richmond also does not block a lot of shots, coming in second from the bottom in the A-10 t 2.4 per outing.
  • Chris Mooney is the dean of Atlantic 10 coaches as he works in his 21st season at the helm of the Spiders, with a record of 370-294 at UR and a mark of 412-333 in 24 seasons as a collegiate head coach overall. He has guided Richmond to the NCAA tournament on three occasions (2010, 2011 , 2022.)

All-Time Series
Sunday is the 36th meeting between the Hawks and Spiders with St. Joe's holding a 23-12 series advantage. SJU has won two in a row in the series and five of the last six. St. Joe's is 9-6 all-time at the Robins Center.

Last Time Against Richmond
Saint Joseph's went up by as many as 18 in the first half on its way to a 78-62 win against Richmond on February 22, 2025. Erik Reynolds II scored 25 and hit a career-high seven three-pointers. Rasheer Fleming tallied 23 and had six boards. Anthony Finkley contributed with eight points and eight rebounds. The Hawks used a 16-3 run early in the first half to soar out to a 23-9 lead eight minutes into the contest. Leading 43-27 at the break, SJU pushed the lead out to 23 on a pair of occasions and never led by less than 11 the rest of the game.

Towering Over The Competition
With Justice Ajogbor (6'10"), Jaden Smith (6'11") and Steven Solano (7'0"), the Hawks' roster is loaded with height. Only eight of St. Joe's opponents have three or more players who are 6'10" or taller, led by five on Duquesne's roster. Two teams – Princeton and Rutgers-Camden – do not have a player on their squad that is taller than 6'9".

Next Up
St. Joe's is back at Hagan Arena on Wednesday, January 14 hosting St. Bonaventure. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with the game to air on ESPN+.
