Opening Tip
The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team travels to the Southern Tier of New York to face  St. Bonaventure on February 18. Tipoff from the Reilly Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with the game airing on ESPN+.

Dunking Derek
On Thursday, senior Derek Simpson was named to the watch list for the State Farm Slam Dunk Championship. The event is set for Friday, April 3 at 7 p.m. ET inside historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, and will be broadcast nationally at 1:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, April 5 on ESPN. Simpson is a two-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Week. He has three double-doubles on the season, all of them coming in conference play. He is the only player in the A-10 and one of only 16 nationally to  average at least 13.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. Since the beginning of conference play, he is posting better than 15.0 points per game and is leading the Atlantic 10 in assists. He scored his 1,000th point overall on January 11 at Richmond.

Making His Case
Austin Williford earned his second Big 5 Rookie of the Week honor on Monday after a career-high 19 points against Fordham. He has also been named the A-10 Rookie of the Week twice. The Charlottesville, Va. native is also one of only 28 freshmen nationally to average at least 7.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game. He is the only Atlantic 10 or Big 5 freshman to hit all of those benchmarks.

Battle For The Double Bye
With six conference games remaining, Saint Joseph's is 7-5 in A-10 play. The Hawks are tied with Dayton and Duquesne for the fourth and final double-bye spot for the conference tournament. St. Joe's holds the tiebreaker at the moment with a 2-0 record combined against the Flyers and Dukes. The margin is razor thin, however, as four teams are within one game of the coveted top-four spot. SJU has not earned a double-bye since 2016 when it won the Atlantic 10 championship as a four-seed.

Keep Climbing
With another block against Fordham on February 10, Justice Ajogbor increased his margin as the active shot block leader in NCAA D1. His swats against the Rams give him 241 overall in his career. Justin Abson of Georgia will enter Wednesday's game at Texas with 230. Ajogbor is now just three blocks behind Alexandre Sazanov for seventh on the SJU career list. Sazanov had 147 swats in 113 games for the Hawks from 1998-2003.

Dynamic Defense
Since January 11, St. Joe's has shown a marked improvement on the defensive end. In the last nine games, opponents are scoring 67.2 points per game, shooting 38.8 percent from the floor overall and 31.5 percent from distance, going 6-3. They have kept five opponents under 65 points in the stretch and one under 60. Rim protection has been key during that time, as the Hawks have blocked 5.4 shots per game. In its first 14 games against Division I competition this season, SJU was 7-7 and was allowing 75.2 points per game with opponents shooting 44.4 percent from the floor.

Knocking It Down From Deep
In the 23 games he has played this season, Jaiden Glover-Toscano has connected on 65 three-pointers, nearly double the total of his next closest teammate. At his current pace of 2.83 treys per game, he will have 85 through the one game SJU is guaranteed in the conference tournament. That number would rank 10th all-time in a single season on Hawk Hill. As things currently stand, his season is one of 35 in St. Joe's history with a player making 65 or more triples, a feat that has been accomplished by 21 Hawks. Overall, he is inside the top 100 nationally in three-pointers made, three-pointers per game and three-point percentage. Since the beginning of December, his accuracy from beyond the arc has improved significantly. In those 16 games, Glover-Toscano has connected on 39.1 percent (52-for-133) from deep, compared to 30.9 in his first seven contests.

Scouting Report
  • St. Bonaventure enters play 14-11 overall and is 3-9 in the A-10 following a 78-73 setback against Duquesne on Saturday. The Bonnies are tied with La Salle for 12th in the A-10 standings with the Explorers holding the head-to-head matchup.
  • Leading the offense for SBU is Frank Mitchell at 16.1 points per game. He is closely followed by Darryl Simmons II with 16.0 an outing. Cayden Charles adds a third scoring option, netting 13.5 points a night, while Dasonte Bowen tallies 10.3. Mitchell is just shy of averaging a double-double and leads the Atlantic 10 in rebounding at 9.8 boards per contest. Bowen has 113 assists. Simmons, Cayden and Bowen have all seen their scoring totals go up in conference play, averaging 17.8, 14.2 and 12.6 points per game, respectively.
  • The Bonnies have areas in which they perform well on both sides of the ball. Offensively, they are 42nd nationally in three-point percentage at 36.8 percent. They also hit their free throws, ranking 77th at a 75.1 percent clip. SBU protects the rim well, sitting at 34th in NCAA D1 and third in the A-10 (trailing Saint Joseph's) at 4.6 blocks per game.
  • While St. Bonaventure may make a high percentage of threes, it doesn't take too many as it is 12th in the conference at 18.7 attempts per game. It has also given up its share of second-chance opportunities, ranking 299th overall at 22.88 defensive rebounds a night.
  • Mark Schmidt is in his 19th season as the head coach of the Bonnies with a record of 338-249 in Olean. He has guided his teams to seven 20-win seasons and three NCAA tournament appearances.

All-Time Series
Wednesday is the 87th meeting between the Hawks and Bonnies with St. Joe's holding a 52-34 series advantage. The 86 games the two teams have already played and the 52 wins against SBU are the fifth most for any St. Joe's opponent. SJU snapped a 10-game skid against St. Bonaventure with its win last season. Saint Joseph's is 19-18 all-time against the Bonnies on the road, but is looking for its first win at the Reilly Center since an 83-74 victory on March 1, 2014.

Last Time Against St. Bonaventure
The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team rallied from a seven-point deficit with eight minutes remaining to down St. Bonaventure, 68-64, on January 14, 2026. Jaiden Glover-Toscano led all scorers with 23 points. Dasear Haskins posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Derek Simpson scored 11 and delivered seven assists. Saint Joseph's got off to a blistering start, connecting on 10 of its first 14 shots while building a 22-13 lead at the 10:51 mark. The Bonnies cut the lead to 25-21 with 5:29 remaining and were single-handedly kept in the game by Frank Mitchell, who scored more than 60 percent of the team's points in the half. SJU recovered and was able to score five in a row late in the frame before taking a 35-28 lead into the locker room. St. Joe's scored six of the first eight points to open the second half, going up 41-30 less than three minutes in. St. Bonaventure fought back with a 13-1 run, taking its first lead of the night with 12:51 remaining. Down 54-47 with 8:02 remaining, SJU began its comeback. After a free throw by Simpson, Glover-Toscano took over, scoring eight St. Joe's points in a row, the last of them coming on a driving layup, tying the game at 56-56. St. Bonaventure forged back in front and went on top 64-60 with 2:35 to play, but those were the last points SBU scored as the Hawks rallied for the win.
