Opening Tip
The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team travels down I-95 for a key A-10 matchup at George Mason on Saturday, February 7. Tipoff from EagleBank Arena is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. with the game to air on ESPN+.
Long Distance Dedication (Part I)
Saint Joseph's connected on 14 three-pointers on Saturday afternoon at La Salle and nine more against GW on Wednesday. The La Salle game tied for the most threes in a contest this season for the Hawks, matching the total against Coppin State on December 9. The 23 treys in two games are the second most for SJU, trailing only 24 in the contests against Loyola Chicago and La Salle. Overall, since the beginning of conference play, SJU has shot much better from beyond the arc, connecting at a 34.4 percent rate. In non-conference competition, St. Joe's shot 27.4 percent. The Hawks rank fifth in the A-10 in three-pointers made in conference with 90.
Long Distance Dedication (Part II)
Jaiden Glover-Toscano put on a show against George Washington, going 5-for-6 from beyond the arc and 8-for-9 from the floor overall. In 10 A-10 games, he has connected for four or more treys five times and is shooting 37.2 percent from beyond the arc in conference play. In total, he has 10 games this year with three or more triples with a career-high of seven against Coppin State on December 9.
Polar Opposites
Continuing the topic of three-point shooting, the Hawks could not face two more contrasting styles of offense this week. George Washington set a record for treys taken by a St. Joe's opponent with 45, besting the previous mark of 43 by Villanova on December 8, 2018. Meanwhile, George Mason is among the bottom-20 teams nationally, hoisting just 17.9 triples a game.
Keep Climbing
With three more blocks against George Washington on Wednesday,
Justice Ajogbor increased his margin as the active shot block leader in NCAA D1. His swats against the Revolutionaries give him 238 in his career. Justin Abson of Georgia will enter Saturday's game at LSU with 230. Ajogbor's numbers have increased in the last five games with 21 blocks in the span. He has at least three blocks in all five contests.
Getting Noticed
Austin Williford and
Dasear Haskins both were honored with weekly awards on Monday. Williford was the A-10 Rookie of the Week, averaging 8.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. It is the second time this season that the Charlottesville, Va. native has received the accolade. Haskins earned Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week honors for a week in which he averaged 16 points per contest and shot 11-for-17 from the field overall, including 8-for-11 from beyond the arc.
An Underrated Constant
Despite his Big 5 honor this week, the quality of Haskins' season has gone largely under the radar, but people should probably be paying more attention. Since December 9, he is averaging 12.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game and notched his first three career double-doubles. He is also shooting 53.3 percent from the floor and 42.3 percent from three-point range to go along with a 1.32:1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Dynamic Defense
Since January 11, St. Joe's has shown a marked improvement on the defensive end. In the last six games, opponents are scoring 68.1 points per game and shooting 38.2 percent from the floor. Rim protection has been a key during that time, as the Hawks have blocked 5.9 shots per game.
Taking The Show On The Road
A 3-6 mark in away contests doesn't exactly scream "road warriors," but the 2026 calendar portion of the schedule has been much better for the Hawks away from Hagan Arena than the 2025 part was. In its last four road games, SJU is 3-1, is scoring 72.8 points per game and is shooting 47.2 percent overall and 40.0 percent from three-point range. It has also held opponents to 66.5 points per game and 37.7 percent shooting. Contrasting that are the first five away tilts of the season, which saw the Hawks go 0-5 and give up 89.8 points per game, including 94+ on three occasions. Opponents also shot 50.5 percent in those contests.
Scouting Report
- George Mason is 20-3 overall with an 8-2 record in the A-10 and is coming off a 71-65 loss against Duquesne on Wednesday. The Patriots have outperformed expectations so far after being picked sixth in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll. GMU received votes in the most recent AP Top-25.
- Kory Mincy leads the offense for George Mason at 16.6 points per game, ranking in the top-5 of the A-10. Also in double figure scoring are Riley Allenspach (13.3), Jahari Long (11.4) and Fatt Hill (10.6). Allenspach tops the team with 6.1 rebounds per contest. Long leads the way with 87 assists, sixth in the conference.
- As it has been for the last several seasons, defense has been the calling card for the Patriots who rank 30th nationally, allowing just 67.1 points per game. On the offensive side of the ball, a lot of their work comes at the free throw line, sitting inside the top-30 in NCAA D1 in both attempts and makes, averaging 18.6 points a night at the charity stripe.
- It is a methodical and driving-based offense for GMU, which ranks below 300th in three-point attempts and makes per game and is 235th with 9.3 fastbreak points an outing. The defensive numbers are even more impressive as they don't take the ball off their opponents much, forcing 11.0 turnovers a game and come up with 5.3 steals a contest.
- Tony Skinn is in his third season as the head coach of his alma mater and has enjoyed nothing but success in Fairfax. His teams have won 20 or more games in all three of his seasons. As a player for George Mason, he was a two-time All-CAA selection and was a starter on the 2006 Final Four team.
All-Time Series
Saturday is the 21st matchup between the Hawks and Patriots with GMU holding a 12-8 advantage. All but one of the games have come since George Mason joined the Atlantic 10 for the 2013-14 season. The only meeting prior to the teams being conference foes was a 73-64 win for SJU in the 2002 NIT. Before the Hawks won three in a row from January 2023 through March 2024, GMU had won seven straight in the series.
Last Time Against George Mason
The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team saw its Atlantic 10 Championship run come to a close in the semifinals, falling to George Mason, 74-64 on March 15, 2025.
Anthony Finkley scored 14 in the game.
Rasheer Fleming had nine points and 12 rebounds. The Patriots were able to jump out to an early lead, opening a 25-7 advantage midway through the frame. GMU shot 65.2 percent in the first half on its way to a 37-28 lead at the break. The Hawks made an early second half run, cutting the gap to one point on two occasions, but George Mason settled back in and held a double digit lead the majority of the way home.
Next Up
St. Joe's returns to Hagan Arena for its third game in seven days, hosting Fordham on Tuesday, February 10. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with the game to air on ESPN+.
