KINGSTON, RI (05/09/02) - Sophomore leftfielder Lindsey Grace roped a three-run double to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning and freshman shortstop Aida Esquer delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Temple to a 5-4 win over Saint Joseph's in first round play of the 2002 Verizon Atlantic 10 Softball Tournament at the URI Softball Complex.
Host Rhode Island Rams (27-27) stunned the softball world in the first game, ending Massachusetts' (48-11) 33-game win streak with a 1-0 win. It also ended the Minutewomen's 49-game A-10 win streak, and a 20-game win streak in A-10 Tournament play.
Saint Joseph's (32-16) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as senior first baseman
Missy Rhoades delivered an RBI single that scored senior catcher
Teresa Andreani and freshman
Alicia Cunic. Temple (27-23) answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning as junior first baseman Bari Lynn Pflueger drove in her A-10 leading 43rd run of the year with a deep sacrifice fly to center, scoring senior second baseman Katie Spencer, who doubled to lead off the frame.
The Hawks got two more runs off Owl starter Liz Naughton (12-10) in the fifth inning. Junior third baseman
Desiree McGhie led off with a bunt single and was moved to second via a sacrifice by senior leftfielder
Megan Brown. Freshman
Megan Richardson singled to put runners at first and third. After Richardson moved to second on a ground out off the bat of freshman rightfielder
Cara Deldeo, senior shortstop
Kristin Nau produced a two-run single to give SJU a 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Temple loaded the bases with walks to designated player Ashley Caudill and pinch hitter Katie Mennig, sandwiching a single by Spencer. That brought Grace to the plate, one of three all-A-10 performers for the Owls. The leftfielder delivered with a drive to left center, scoring all three Owl baserunners and tying the game at 4-4.
Pfleuger led off the eighth with a double to deep center. Hawk starter
Dana Travis (19-9) then walked rightfielder Chrissy Harris and allowed a single to right by catcher Alexis Gary to load the bases. With both the infield and outfield playing in, Esquer hit a deep fly ball to left for an RBI single to end the game.
Temple now advances to play Rhode Island in the winner's bracket at noon on Friday.The Hawks will face UMass at 2:00 p.m.
