HAWKS DROP DOUBLEHEADER TO UMASS

EAST NORRITON, PA (04/06/02) - Saint Joseph's finally played on its home softball field on Saturday afternoon. And of all opponents, the Hawks had to draw seven-time defending Atlantic 10 Champion Massachusetts. On a miserably cold day that featured occasional flakes of snow, SJU put up a valiant fight, especially in the nightcap, but the Minutewomen swept the twinbill, 7-1 and 4-1, to extend their A-10 unbeaten streak to 32 games. In the second game, sophomore pitcher Dana Travis brought her "A" game to the mound. The Hawk hurler matched UMass senior Jen Hadley, the 2001 A-10 Pitcher of the Year, pitch-for-pitch through six innings. Travis struck out eight while walking two in the contest. With the score tied at 1-1, the Minutewomen struck for three runs in the top of the seventh. The big hit came off the bat of shortstop Emily Robustelli, a single to deep right that scored leftfielder Aisha Franke with the go-ahead run. Centerfielder Teri Rooney, who left the game earlier after suffering a head injury while sliding into third, then drove in two insurance runs with a single to put UMass up 4-1. UMass scored its first run in the third inning. Rooney drove a ball to right center for a two-out triple. After leaving the game for a pinch-runner due to injury, 2001 A-10 Player of the Year Scooter Wheeler singled her home for the game's first run. The Hawks tied it in the fourth as senior designated hitter Teresa Andreani led off the inning with a double to right. Following a passed ball, freshman catcher Alicia Cunic singled her home. SJU proceeded to load the bases as Missy Rhoades reached base via a walk and Desiree McGhie singled to right. But Hadley got Robin Berry and Megan Richardson to ground out to end the inning. In the opener, junior Brandie Adams held the Minutewomen hitless through the first 2 and 2/3 innings. Then Rooney singled and Wheeler hit her fifth homer, just clearing the right field foul pole to give UMass a 2-0 lead in the third. The Minutewomen plated two more in fourth, to move ahead 4-0, then picked up another in the sixth and two unearned runs in the seventh for a 7-0 lead. SJU scored its lone run in the seventh. Andreani hit a one-out single to center. Cunic then doubled down the leftfield line to make it second and third. Lindsey McNamara then hit an RBI grounder to short, scoring Andreani. The Hawks, now 16-6, and 3-5 in Atlantic 10 play, will look to end their current five-game skid against UMass (25-10, 8-0) in the series finale on Sunday (noon).
