CLEMENTI WELCOMED HOME IN SOFTBALL'S SPLIT WITH SAINT PETER'S

BOXSCORE GAME 2 JERSEY CITY, NJ (4/19/04) --- Junior Alicia Cunic slugged her team-leading fifth homer of the year and sophomore Jill Clementi went 4-for-5 with five RBI in her homecoming as Saint Joseph's split a non-conference doubleheader at Saint Peter's on Monday. SJU won game one handily, 11-3, but were shutout in game two, 2-0, to fall to 13-19 on the season. St. Joe's got on the board early and often in game one and coasted to the 11-3 victory. The visitors opened the first inning by scoring three runs as junior Cara Deldeo led off with a single and stole second. She scored as classmate Megan Richardson reached on an error to give SJU a 1-0 lead. Clementi singled to advance Richardson to third, who later scored on a two-run single by junior Robin Berry. The Hawks added three more in the second inning as sophomore Katie McCann, Deldeo and Richardson all reached base to load the bases with no outs. Clementi ripped a two-run double and Berry lofted a sacrifice fly to give senior Dana Travis all the support she would need in the circle. The co-captain, who had allowed only one earned run in her last 26 innings pitched, struck out eight in a complete game victory to improve to 9-6 on the season. Travis is now 6-2 with a 1.30 ERA since returning from spring break. SJU added a single run in the fourth on Cunic's round-tripper, the 17th of her career. Clementi drove in two more runs on her second double of the game in the sixth and singled in another in the seventh. The sophomore, playing right around the corner from her home in Bloomfield, N.J. She was also facing her former high school coach at Immaculate Heart Academy, Jeff Horohonich, now the first-year skipper at SPC (5-15). The Crimson and Gray were stymied in the nightcap, managing just five hits off Peacock starter Robin Freels. Saint Joseph's threatened in the top of the second, but couldn't take advantage. Cunic singled and Berry reached on a fielder's choice to put runners at first and second with no outs, but SJU went down on two groundouts and a lineout. Saint Peter's scored a single unearned run in the bottom of the second off Deldeo. Danielle Bronner reached base on an error and advanced to second on another error. Two bunts scored her to give SPC a 1-0 lead. Another Hawk error allowed the leadoff batter in the fifth to reach base and scored on a Nikki Melchiorre single. All three SJU hurlers saw action, with Deldeo getting the start and throwing three innings, allowing four hits and one unearned run. Freshman Lauren Hughes tossed two innings of one-hit relief, allowing another unearned run, before Travis tossed the final inning. Saint Joseph's takes on Temple (Wednesday) and Dayton (Friday) in two critical Atlantic 10 doubleheaders this week at East Norriton Field. Friday will be Senior Day as the Hawks will recognize its two seniors, Dana Travis and Lindsey McNamara.
