PHILADELPHIA, PA (02/21/02)- A pair of Saint Joseph's University basketball standouts were recognized as Verizon Academic All-District 2 selections for the 2001-02 season. The two Hawks honored, seniors Bill Phillips and
Susan Moran, were also named to the All-District 2 Team last year. The tandem will now be placed on the Verizon Academic All-America ballot, which is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Both student-athletes (Moran - Second Team and Phillips - Third Team) earned Academic All-America honors last season.
Phillips, who is completing work on his Master's degree in financial services, boasts a 3.93 GPA in his graduate course work. He leads the Hawks in rebounding (7.2) and three-point field goal percentage (.537) and ranks fourth on the team in scoring (11.5 ppg). A threed-time all-District choice, he was also an Academic All-District 2 pick in 2000.
Moran, the Atlantic 10 Conference scoring leader with a 22.4 ppg average, is the fifth leading scorer in NCAA Division I. A marketing major with a 3.67 grade point average, she was a preseason First-Team All-Atlantic 10 choice and is a national finalist for the inaugural Senior CLASS Award.
The rest of the Academic All-District 2 women's basketball team included: American's Katryn Costenbader, Drexel's Michelle Maslowski, Penn State's Kelly Mazzante and Anne Tierney of Lehigh.
In addition to Phillips, the men's team was comprised of: Princeton's Ahmed El-Nokali, Monmouth's Jason Krayl, Penn State's Tyler Smith and Marshall's J.R. Vanhoose.
