Philadelphia, PA (4/7/01) - The St. Joseph's
softball bats finally came alive, ripping 15 hits in
a 6-1 win over the Temple Owls in the second
game of an Atlantic 10 Conference
doubleheader at Temple Field. The Owls won
the first game with an offensive barrage of its
own, 11-3.
Heading into the doubleheader, SJU had an
overall team batting average of .232, by far the lowest in the Charlie
Wieners Era (11 seasons) on Hawk Hill. Last season, SJU had a .303
season-ending average, ranking among the nation's leaders in the
category.
The 15 hits in the nightcap were the most by the Hawks this season
and it marked only the second time SJU had topped double digits in hits
in a game. Junior
Gale Treskot, who has been playing with a bad
contusion on her left hand, broke out of a season-long slump, going 4-6
on the day, including two RBI in the win.
Senior Heather Chapman and freshman
Lindsey McNamara each had
three hits and two RBI in the second game, with Chapman turning in a
perfect game at the plate (3-3, SF).
Freshman
Dana Travis picked up her sixth win of the year, tops on the
squad. The Hawk newcomer did not have her best stuff, allowing six hits
and giving up six walks, but she worked her way out of trouble for the
victory.
Holding a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning with their ace, sophomore Brandie
Adams, on the the mound, the Hawks looked to be in good shape in the
opener. Then the Owls erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fifth and
five in the bottom of the sixth to break open the game.
Sophomore pitcher Bari Lynn Pflueger led the way for Temple, going
4-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI, while picking up her ninth
win of the year on the mound.
For SJU, Adams allowed seven runs, four earned, to up her A-10 leading
ERA from 0.54 to 0.89. Kristin Doris relieved her in the sixth but could
not cool the hot Owl bats, allowing the remaining four runs.
Offensively,
Teresa Andreani and
Missy Rhoades each had RBI doubles
while Treskot had the only multi-hit game (2-3).
SJU, 12-12-1, 4-1 in A-10 play, will conclude its series with Temple
(17-18, 6-2) on Sunday (noon) at Temple Field.
